What Actually Shipped On October 6

Marathon Update 1.1.9.2 went live on October 6, 2026 under the name Nightfall Refresh, and it is the first step in the roadmap Bungie laid out in September after pushing the update that had been scheduled for September 22 into December.

The patch notes open with the list, and it is the whole scoreboard:

  • Runner, Cradle, and Faction levels
  • Priority Contracts
  • Rank
  • Vault contents
  • Zone access

The framing in the announcement is that ONI closed the fiscal season, took your credits and equipment as payment on your outstanding balance, and left you “in debt”. Cradle enhancements and faction aftermarket upgrades were also restored to default. In practice, the character who had pushed Sekiguchi and had a Prestige-modded loadout in the vault is today indistinguishable from someone who installed the game this morning.

Bungie’s stated reason for wiping is honest about the failure it is correcting: Season 2: Nightfall shipped progression problems that accelerated some players into the endgame and left others behind, which made Extraction harder to engage with and stopped the reset from working as intended.

One line in that same announcement matters more than the reset itself: Marathon is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule. No more fixed seasonal deadlines. Updates get the time they need, and the roadmap is now dated by content drops - October, December 8, March 2027.

The Calendar That Replaced Seasons

Since seasons are gone, your schedule is an activity calendar. These dates come from the October 6 notes and the Nightfall Refresh blog:

DateWhat is live
October 6Nightfall Refresh: progression and economy reset, NuCaloric Reward Pass
October 8 (Thursday)Outpost opens for the refresh; Sponsored Perimeter weekend begins (October 8-12)
October 15Cryo Archive returns, now Thursday through Monday every week instead of ending Sunday
October 20 - November 9Vault Breaker, plus C.A.R.R.I. returning October 20 through the end of the refresh
November 10 - November 23Ordnance Heist
December 8Symbiosis: permanent PvE, expanded Perimeter, Bishop shell, Team Deathmatch test, social space and firing range
March 2027Connected PvE / PvP / PvEvP survival experiences, refactored Cradle, narrative quest system, new enemies, a new zone

Sponsored Queues run Thursday through Monday for the rest of Nightfall Refresh, on the same schedule as Cryo Archive: Sponsored Perimeter first, Sponsored Marsh in week two, Sponsored Night Marsh in week three, then the three-week rotation repeats until December 8. Regular Extraction stays available in every zone the whole time.

That schedule change is not cosmetic. Cryo Archive used to close on Sunday, which meant your weekend was the deadline. Now the week runs through Monday, and Bungie’s own pitch is that you “finish your weekends on a high with a Compiler kill.” If you have a job with a Saturday, this is the single most player-friendly line in the notes.

Progression And Economy: What Pays Now

The progression block is short and it all points one direction:

  • Increased XP yields for defeating UESC forces.
  • Reduced rank reputation requirements for all Factions, explicitly to fit the shorter refresh window.
  • VIP rank reputation requirements now equal each faction’s final standard requirement. The VIP tier no longer sits above the last standard node.
  • Cradle XP increased 30 percent for the duration of Nightfall Refresh.
  • Armory credit costs cut 30 percent on most wares; barter salvage costs cut 20-50 percent.
  • Weapon and Backpack Schema armory wares now cost Credits, and the Season 2 Rewards Pass had weapon schemas and materials replaced with Credits.
  • Monitor scan XP reduced 50 percent.

Add it up and the optimal grind flipped. Kill-based contracts moved to the front of the queue because they now feed runner XP, faction rank and Cradle XP at once, while scan objectives got half as efficient. If you are rebuilding from zero, the routing logic in the Priority Contracts guide is the map for that; the heat side of the same math is in the vault and heat management guide.

Two economy details worth knowing before you spend anything. First, the reward pass changed hands: the NuCaloric Reward Pass is available now at no additional cost to everyone who owns Marathon, and it is not time-limited. Second, there is a new set of login rewards every week during the refresh, and they accumulate - miss a week and it is still there.

The Combat Sandbox Changes

Bungie said it wanted to shake up the meta, and the numbers show it went after three specific things: the sniper slot, Recon’s scan, and invisible shields.

Repeater HPR got the largest buff in the patch: RPM 85 to 90, base magazine 9 to 12, reloads two rounds at a time (rolled in from the Prestige mod), empty reload 6.84s down to 5.2s, and damage falloff start pushed from 37m to 53m at base range with the end point from 82.5m to 87m. Hip-fire error cones shrank roughly 54 percent initially and 47 percent finally, and aim assist cone size grew about 59 percent at base stat.

Hardline PR went the other way. Falloff start at base range dropped from 74m to 39m and the end point from 150m to 62.4m; at max range, 119m to 75m and 195m to 120m. Devs said the redesigned Repeater was eating the Hardline’s space, so the precision rifle archetype lost range and gained ease of use.

Magnum MC lost base damage 41 to 35, which moves optimal time-to-kill against 200 health from 0.87s to 1.3s. D54 Battle Pistol went 16 to 14 (0.97s to 1.1s), and its Daredevil Prestige Stock lost a hidden 15 percent damage bonus, which is the end of one-shotting blue and purple-gold shields with the super burst. DRRVSH Prestige Unique now carries a -70 range penalty, cutting max range before falloff from 39m to 25m. KKV-9SD gained base damage 9 to 10.5 while losing precision bonus damage 1.29 to 1.1 - same 0.85s optimal TTK, but 11 precision hits instead of 15.

Biotoxic Disinjector got the loudest buff: beam mode 13 to 16 per tick, taking TTK against 200 health from 0.92s to 0.75s, which the notes describe as the fastest non-shotgun TTK in the game. Its grenade launcher mode was rebuilt from a three-grenade full-auto volley into a semi-auto single shot at 50 ammo per trigger pull, dropping theoretical per-magazine grenades from 81 to 20.

Recon’s Echo Pulse is the change that will decide matches. Pulses now fire in a cone in your aim direction instead of an omnidirectional sphere, and the first hit on non-Runner combatants staggers them and briefly blocks their combat abilities. The dev note explains the reasoning: the Season 1 mid-cycle buff made the ability too non-interactive, and they rejected the most-requested alternative - limiting ping visibility to the Recon player - because it would hand an even bigger advantage to pre-made crews with comms. Interrogation’s counter-notification is now delayed two seconds.

Invisibility was retuned against Spectre Shields: invisible players who shoot back now flicker out of invisibility after 0.2 seconds instead of 0.9. Proximity Sensors lost their wall-visible radius visuals and gained search radius, 8m to 12m. Rooks lost flares but keep the end-of-Nightfall inventory buffs: a Compromised Sneak Pack, two Claymores, a depleted Self Revive and a Signal Jammer.

Solo queues got real attention. UESC aggression was reduced against runners in Solo playlists and UESC damage dealt to runners cut 20 percent in Solo playlists. That is the fix for the complaint that drove most of the population decline: dying to machines before you ever see another player.

Zone Access And Event Windows

Perimeter and Dire Marsh are the first-week focus, and Bungie’s own advice is to spend the first days exploring Perimeter or either version of Dire Marsh. Outpost does not open until Thursday. Cryo Archive returns on October 15 with a Thursday-through-Monday weekly schedule.

Vault Breaker runs October 20 to November 9, with the armory restructured for a post-wipe economy:

  • Tier 1 repeatable materials packs cut from 5 per week to 2
  • Cryo Archive Key Template cut from 3 per week to 1
  • Deluxe weapon, Deluxe Backpack and Deluxe Shield Implant cut from 3 per week to 2
  • Vault Keys 4, 5 and 6 only purchasable during weeks two and three
  • Limited offers DRRVISH, Salt Wages, Omnipositor and the Biotoxic Disinjector plus its ammo only in weeks two and three
  • All upgrades available for purchase from the start
  • Solo players receive 50 percent more Tier 1 and Tier 2 event currency
  • Certain Tier 3 standard contract objectives, such as low UESC kill counts, cannot be completed inside Vault Breaker

That last line is the design telling you what it is afraid of: power-leveling contracts inside a low-risk mode during the first week of a wipe. If your plan was to farm Tier 3 rep in Vault Breaker, it does not work.

Ordnance Heist is booked for November 10-23, with both the MIDA and Traxus armories pre-cut for it: deluxe sponsored kits 3 per week to 2, superior sponsored kits removed entirely, themed weapons 2 per week to 1 and downgraded from Superior to Deluxe, Sneak and Ammo Backpacks downgraded to Deluxe, and Synapse Cube stock reduced from 1 per week to 1 total. Firestorm key templates now grant 1 key, lockers now need 1 key, and the Firestorm has a 15 percent drop chance from supply drops before and during the event, rising to 30 percent afterwards.

What Is Coming In December And March

Symbiosis, December 8. Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter with a fungal ecosystem that opens new paths, new Pinwheel-style and Upper Complex-style encounters for rare rewards, a new Runner shell called Bishop - described as a fast surgical hunter-killer built on speed, surprise and melee bursts - an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, a rebuilt onboarding, and a social space with a firing range.

Bishop is the eighth shell after Sentinel, the defensive shell that came with Season 2, and it is a melee build in a game where the melee meta has been a knife slot. The shell tier list is where that lands when it ships.

March 2027. An interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, expanded onboarding, a refactored Cradle with deeper shell progression, more focused questlines and narrative, new alien combatants, and an entirely new zone.

Here is my read, since Bungie asked for feedback: a roadmap with three dated milestones and no season clock is better for this game than the schedule it replaced. The Season 2 problem was never that content ran out, it was that progression outran the population, so a wipe plus slower, bigger drops is the honest fix. The risk is obvious - December 8 is eight weeks out, and March is a season’s distance beyond that. A roadmap is a promise, and this community has been burned by one already. Watch whether the December date holds.

Week One Action Plan

  1. Do not skip the tutorial-adjacent contracts. Priority Contracts are reset, so the CyberAcme chain is the fastest path back to faction unlocks. Order matters and it is documented in the contracts guide.
  2. Take combat contracts over scan contracts. UESC kill XP is up, Monitor scan XP is down 50 percent. Same run time, different payout.
  3. Push one faction to VIP instead of spreading rep. VIP now costs the same reputation as the final standard node, and 30 percent cheaper Armory wares means the first real gear arrives sooner.
  4. Bank Cradle XP now. It is running 30 percent hot for the duration of the refresh and that window closes when Symbiosis lands.
  5. Play the Thursday-to-Monday windows, and only those. Sponsored Queues, Cryo Archive and Ranked all sit in the same window. Tuesday and Wednesday are effectively PvE-only days in a 2,293-player game.
  6. Re-test your heat build. The implant heat costs and Shell capacities are in the heat guide; after a wipe you are running default aftermarket, so your Season 2 assumptions are gone.
  7. Decide now whether you want PvP. If the answer is no, Vault Breaker and the PvE queues are getting permanent support in December. If it is yes, the October lobby is small and scheduled - budget for that rather than complaining about it in a Discord nobody is online in.

Final Take

After reading the 1.1.9.2 notes line by line and checking the live population the morning after:

  • Nightfall Refresh is a correction, not a relaunch. It wiped the thing that broke Season 2, gave solo players a real damage reduction, and cut the cost of progression across the board.
  • The calendar replaced the season. Thursday-to-Monday windows, Cryo Archive through Monday, weekly accumulating login rewards, and dated milestones to December 8 and March.
  • Kill things, not cameras. UESC XP up, scan XP halved, Cradle XP up 30 percent, ranks cheaper, VIP equal to the final standard node.
  • The combat patch specifically targeted Recon dominance and invisible-shield duelling, which is the right call even if the cone-scan rework will feel worse for one week.
  • The honest caveat: everything above the December 8 line is intent, not software. Symbiosis is where Marathon either finds its second life or does not.

If you left in August because queue times meant solo extraction against machines, this refresh is aimed at exactly you, and the free-to-try window is not the problem - the game is $40 and running. Come back on a Thursday, run Perimeter or the Marsh, and judge it by who is in the lobby rather than by the patch notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did the Marathon Nightfall Refresh reset on October 6?

Update 1.1.9.2 reset Runner, Cradle and Faction levels, Priority Contracts, Rank, Vault contents and zone access, and restored Cradle enhancements and faction aftermarket upgrades to their default state. Credits and equipment were consumed against your outstanding balance, so every account started the refresh at zero.

Is Marathon still running seasons?

No. Bungie confirmed it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule and fixed seasonal deadlines, in favour of dated updates: Nightfall Refresh on October 6, Symbiosis on December 8, and a larger connected experience planned for March 2027.

When is Ranked and Sponsored content available during Nightfall Refresh?

Sponsored Queues run every weekend from Thursday through Monday for the rest of the refresh, following the same schedule as Cryo Archive. Sponsored Perimeter ran October 8-12, Sponsored Marsh in week two, Sponsored Night Marsh in week three, and the rotation repeats until Symbiosis on December 8.

Is Marathon dead after the October 6 wipe?

Small, not dead. Steam's concurrent-player counter for Marathon was reading 2,293 when I checked it on October 7, about twelve hours after the refresh went live, and third-party reporting in August had already put the decline above 95 percent of the March launch level. The wipe at least concentrates whoever is left into the same Thursday-to-Monday windows.

What is the best thing to do in week one of Nightfall Refresh?

Farm UESC. XP yields for defeating UESC forces were raised, rank reputation requirements for all factions were cut, and Cradle XP is up 30 percent for the duration of the refresh, with Armory credit costs down 30 percent and most barter salvage costs down 20-50 percent. Combat-first progression is the fastest ladder in the game right now.
