Marathon Ranked Mode Guide: Release Date, Requirements, Rewards & How It Works
Marathon Ranked is back after the October 6 Nightfall Refresh wiped every rank. Real entry requirements, all six tiers, the Thursday-to-Monday schedule, and what to climb for.
Marathon’s competitive ladder is real, it is live, and as of October 6 everybody standing on it started from the floor. Ranked launched on March 21, 2026 with a weekend-only window and a gear-based ante, came back on June 14 with Season 2’s reworked rewards and progression, and was then wiped by the Nightfall Refresh — Update 1.1.9.2 lists Rank in the same reset block as Runner, Cradle and Faction levels, Priority Contracts, Vault Contents and zone access.
That is the honest framing for this guide. What follows is what Ranked actually is right now: the entry requirements, the Holotag and score-target loop, all six tiers from Bronze to Pinnacle, what each tier paid out in Season 1, and how the Thursday-to-Monday Sponsored Queue calendar decides when you can climb.

Ranked Mode Release Date and Unlock Requirements
Original launch: Saturday, March 21, 2026 (Season 1) Season 2 return: Sunday, June 14, 2026, with new rewards and progression changes Current status: live inside the Sponsored Queues rotation, with every rank reset on October 6, 2026 Access requirement: Runner Level 25 Schedule: Thursday through Monday, repeating a three-week zone cycle until Symbiosis on December 8
Where Ranked Sits in the October Calendar
Bungie locked the Sponsored Queue schedule in the Nightfall Refresh post, and it is finally predictable enough to plan a session around:
| Window | What is up |
|---|---|
| Oct 6 | Nightfall Refresh live — progression, economy, Rank and Vault wiped |
| Oct 8-12 | Sponsored Perimeter, the first weekend of the cycle |
| Oct 15 | Cryo Archive returns, now running Thursday through Monday instead of ending Sunday |
| Week 2 | Sponsored Marsh |
| Week 3 | Sponsored Night Marsh, plus Vault Breaker from October 20 |
| Until Dec 8 | The three-week rotation repeats, with regular Extraction still available in each zone |
Prerequisites Checklist
Before you can queue for Ranked, make sure you have cleared the following:
- Reach Runner Level 25 - grind contracts and extractions in unranked Extraction; the refresh’s +30% Cradle XP is doing the heavy lifting
- Re-unlock your zones - zone access was part of the October 6 reset, and Outpost only reopened on Thursday, October 8
- Build gear value to the ante - 3,000 credits for the low-stakes ladder, 10,000 for high stakes, with Armory prices roughly 30% cheaper right now
- Equip the Holotag that matches your bracket - it gates entry and sets the score target you have to hit
- Line up a crew - Ranked has no solo queue option
Ranked mode unlock status shown in the playlist menu. You must be Level 25 to access.
Why Level 25?
Bungie’s threshold ensures players have:
- Sufficient game knowledge before entering competitive play
- Basic gear progression completed
- Understanding of heat management and extraction mechanics
- At least 10-15 hours of gameplay experience (average time to Level 25)
How Ranked Works: Gear Ante, Map Rotation, and the Thursday-to-Monday Window
The Thursday-to-Monday Window
Ranked isn’t available 24/7. It sits inside the Sponsored Queues, and the Nightfall Refresh gave those a fixed rhythm: every weekend, Thursday through Monday, for the rest of the refresh, on the same schedule as Cryo Archive. Bungie’s stated reason is that Sponsored Queues “offer a more level playing field and make it easy to jump into a match”, so the window is now a calendar entry rather than a favour.
Current window:
- Opens: Thursday
- Closes: Monday — Cryo Archive moved from a Sunday close to Monday on October 15 for the same reason, so you can finish a weekend on a Compiler kill
- Rotation: Sponsored Perimeter (Oct 8-12), then Sponsored Marsh, then Sponsored Night Marsh, repeating until Symbiosis on December 8
- Peak activity: Saturday afternoon in your region, the one window where a game running around 2,000 concurrent players still fills lobbies fast enough to matter
Map Rotation System
Ranked runs on whatever zone owns that weekend’s Sponsored Queue slot, so the Ranked rotation and the Sponsored rotation are now the same table. Read it before you commit a loadout to a night.
Zone pool you will actually queue into:
| Map | Density | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Perimeter | High | Aggressive plays, close-quarters combat, first weekend of the cycle |
| Dire Marsh | Medium-High | Mid-range engagements, flanking routes, water corridors for heat dumps |
| Night Marsh | Medium | The Season 2 dark variant, where a planned route beats reflexes |
| Outpost | Medium | Tactical positioning and long-range duels — reopened October 8 after the reset |
Note: Cryo Archive is not a Ranked map. It is the Vault Breaker queue, which gets another run from October 20 to November 9 with a solo-friendly economy (+50% Tier 1 and Tier 2 event currency) and a Thursday-to-Monday schedule. Regular Extraction stays available in each zone alongside the Sponsored versions. A permanent PvE experience only arrives with the December 8 Symbiosis update.

Gear Ante System Explained
The gear ante is Marathon’s twist on Ranked entry requirements, and the numbers are fixed rather than vague: a 3,000-credit loadout value for the low-stakes bracket and 10,000 credits for high stakes. Your Holotag is what ties it together — you equip the tag for the bracket you want, the tag gates your entry value, and the tag sets the score target you have to extract with to gain rank points.
How the ante behaves in practice:
- Loadout value is summed from equipped weapons, armor, implants and consumables, at the same credit values the Armory sells them for
- Two brackets, two antelists — 3,000 credits keeps the ladder reachable straight after a wipe; 10,000 is where the gear-pool gap between a fresh account and a veteran still shows
- Sponsored kits close that gap — Ranked kits refresh when your rank changes, which is why the July and August patch notes spent line items on kit refresh bugs instead of retuning the ante
- Death is the tax — you lose what you carry, and the rank penalty scales with your Holotag’s value
The current economy makes the ante cheaper (Update 1.1.9.2): Armory credit costs are down roughly 30% and barter salvage costs down 20-50% for the duration of the refresh, and Weapon and Backpack Schema wares now cost Credits instead of materials. Rebuilding to a 10,000-credit ante is measurably faster in October than it was in September.
Pro Tip: Do not bring your best gear into your first Ranked weekend back. Clear the 3,000 ante with a mid-tier loadout and re-measure the meta first — October 6 reworked Repeater HPR (85 to 90.1 RPM, magazine 9 to 12, empty reload 6.84s to 5.2s, falloff start pushed from 37m to 53m), retuned Hardline PR toward a hip-fire identity, weakened the Magnum and the DRRVSH, and rebuilt Recon’s Echo Pulse from an omnidirectional sphere into a cone in your aim direction.
All 6 Rank Tiers Explained: Bronze to Pinnacle
Marathon’s Ranked system features six distinct ranks, each with three sub-tiers (e.g., Gold I, Gold II, Gold III). You climb by extracting with your Holotag’s score target met, and you fall by dying with it unmet.
Bungie has never published a rank distribution, so the share column below is my own read of Season 1 lobbies rather than a statistic — use it to judge how much climbing is left in a bracket, not as a hard number.
Rank Structure Overview
| Rank | Sub-Tiers | Estimated Skill Level | Placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | I, II, III | Beginner / First-time Ranked | Starting rank for all players |
| Silver | I, II, III | Intermediate / Casual PvP | ~20-30% of player base |
| Gold | I, II, III | Above Average / Regular extraction shooter players | ~30-40% of player base |
| Platinum | I, II, III | Advanced / Dedicated grinders | ~15-20% of player base |
| Diamond | I, II, III | Expert / Top-tier mechanical skill | ~5-10% of player base |
| Pinnacle | I, II, III | Elite / Professional-level players | Top 1-3% of player base |
All six rank tiers displayed in the Ranked progression screen. Each tier has three subdivisions.
How Ranking Works
Climbing the Ladder:
- Extract with your score target met - your equipped Holotag sets a value target for the run, and clearing it with a successful extraction is the rank-point engine
- Win engagements - taking an enemy Runner’s Holotag feeds the same loop, which is why third-partying a full-fight crew is worth more than an isolated kill
- Survive - the run only counts if you reach the extraction; rank points are paid on extraction value, not on time spent alive
Losing Rank:
- Dying without extracting - you forfeit the run’s score progress and the penalty scales with the value of the Holotag you are carrying
- Multiple failed runs - consecutive losses can demote you across sub-tiers, and there is no solo escape hatch to grind it back
- Progression resets - Ranks reset at major content milestones, not on a fixed calendar anymore
Reset status (October 7): the wipe is no longer a forecast. Update 1.1.9.2 went live on October 6 and reset Rank in the same block as Runner, Cradle and Faction levels, Priority Contracts, Vault Contents and zone access. Bungie also abandoned the strict seasonal schedule this guide originally described (September 14 dev update): resets and major content now key off the December 8 Symbiosis update and the March 2027 connected-experience release. Plan the climb around those two nodes, because everyone else is starting from Bronze again.
Highest Rank Determines Rewards
Unlike some games where your current rank determines rewards, Marathon rewards you based on your highest rank achieved during the season. This means:
- If you hit Platinum III but drop back to Gold I at the reset, you still get Platinum rewards
- You can “bank” your peak rank and experiment with risky plays afterward
- This system encourages aggressive climbing early in the refresh window — which matters more than usual right now, because October 6 put every account back at the bottom of the ladder and Symbiosis on December 8 is the next scheduled stop
Season 1 Ranked Rewards: Gun Styles, Titles, and Shell Cosmetics
These are the Season 1 payouts, published when Ranked first opened in March. Season 2 relaunched Ranked on June 14 explicitly “with new rewards and progression changes to keep the climb moving”, and the October 6 reset reopened the window — so treat the table below as the baseline reward shape rather than this cycle’s shop list, and check your in-game Ranked rewards screen for the current gun styles.

Loot Packages During Ranked
On top of end-of-window rewards, climbing pays out sponsored kits — pre-geared loadouts that refresh when your rank changes, which the July and August patch notes both spent fixes on. That is the practical reward loop after a wipe: the kit is what lets you queue at a competitive gear value while your own vault is still empty.
Strategy Note: Do not burn your best gear in early Ranked matches. Build the Ranked-specific inventory out of kit and Armory purchases first — Armory credit costs are down roughly 30% during Nightfall Refresh, so the cheapest route to a 10,000-credit ante is buying it, not risking it.
Best Strategies to Climb Ranks Fast
1) Open on Perimeter (October 8-12)
Sponsored Perimeter owns the first weekend of the Nightfall Refresh rotation (October 8-12), and it is still the best climb map in the pool for a simple reason: everyone else was wiped on the same day, so the gear and level spread on a Thursday-night Perimeter queue is far tighter than it was in September.
- Predictable routes - most players follow similar loot paths, which makes ambush placement learnable
- High player density - more engagements mean more score-target attempts per hour logged
- A cheap ante in practice - the 3,000-credit low-stakes bracket is reachable within a few refresh runs now that Armory credits cost about 30% less
Perimeter-Specific Tips:
- Control the central extraction points
- Ambush players returning from high-tier loot zones
- Use verticality to your advantage (Perimeter has more elevation changes than other maps)
- Expect the October 8 re-open, not permanent access: zone access was part of the reset, so a route you planned in September may start behind a lock again

2) Play with a Coordinated Crew
Ranked is crew-based by design. Solo queue was removed in Update 1.1.0.3 on June 23 — Bungie’s dev note said it was never intended and “did not function as players expected” — and matches still mix crew sizes, which means a silent duo is playing against pre-made threes with comms. Communication and role specialization carry the ladder:
Optimal Crew Composition:
- 1x Recon - information gathering and long-range support, now needing real aim prediction after the Echo Pulse cone rework
- 1x Triage - healing and sustain during extended fights, plus Fresh Install’s temporary Heat Capacity on revives
- 1x Destroyer - frontline damage and area control, with Riot Barricade as the cooldown station for the whole crew
If You Only Have One Or Two Players: Queue anyway — mixed-size crews share the pool — but pick accordingly:
- Assassin - invisibility tools for disengaging fights you cannot win
- Vandal - the 20-point Heat Capacity is the highest in the game, which is the difference between escaping and being farmed by a Backdraft build
- Heat management - with no teammate to cover your reset, crouch-walk cooldown and Out of Dodge stop being optimizations and become requirements
3) Extract Early, Extract Often
Don’t get greedy. The ranking system rewards consistent extractions over high-risk, high-reward plays:
Smart Extraction Loop:
- Land in contested zone
- Secure 2-3 medium-value loot pickups
- Engage only if you have positional advantage
- Extract before heat becomes unmanageable
- Repeat
Greedy Loop (Avoid):
- Land in high-tier zone
- Spend 15 minutes looting
- Overheated and low on resources
- Ambushed by fresh crew
- Lose everything
4) Track Your Holotag Score
Your Holotag is not a scoreboard sticker — it is the Ranked contract. The tag you equip sets the score target for the run and the bracket you are allowed to queue, and dying with the target unmet is what costs you rank points. Play it that way:
- Prioritize eliminating isolated players — their tags are the fastest value swing available
- Steal holotags from third-party engagements instead of winning fair fights
- Pull out early when your target is met; carrying a hot tag into a fourth fight is how a Diamond run restarts in Gold
- Remember the penalty scales with the tag’s value, so a Pinnacle-track runner loses real ground on one bad death
5) Adapt to the Rotating Zone
The Sponsored cycle hands you a different zone each weekend, so the climb plan has to be written per map:
| Map | Aggressive Play | Defensive Play | Best Loadout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perimeter | High success rate | Medium success rate | AR + Shotgun |
| Dire Marsh | Medium success rate | High success rate | DMR + SMG, plus water routes for heat dumps |
| Night Marsh | Medium success rate | High success rate | Whatever you can fight with in the dark - the Season 2 variant is a visibility problem first |
| Outpost | Low success rate | High success rate | Sniper + AR |
Common Ranked Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Mistake #1: Playing Ranked Without Level 25 Prep
Problem: Rushing to Level 25 without proper gear or game knowledge
Solution: Spend 5-10 hours in unranked modes learning mechanics before queuing
Mistake #2: Bringing the Only Good Loadout You Own
Problem: Losing your best gear in early Ranked matches
Solution: Build the Ranked inventory out of sponsored kits and Armory buys first. Credit prices are roughly 30% lower during Nightfall Refresh, so buying a second loadout is cheaper than gambling the one you have.
Mistake #3: Missing the Thursday-to-Monday Window
Problem: Showing up Tuesday through Wednesday and finding no Ranked queue at all
Solution: Queue Thursday to Monday. Cryo Archive moved to a Monday close on October 15 and the Sponsored Queues run the same week shape, so Monday is now a ranked day, not a dead one.
Mistake #4: Not Understanding Gear Ante
Problem: Queue rejected because your loadout value is under the 3,000 or 10,000 credit ante
Solution: Check your gear value in the loadout screen before queuing
Mistake #5: Tilting After Losses
Problem: Losing rank from consecutive failed runs due to frustration
Solution: Take breaks after 2-3 losses. The window is four days, not a season, and Rank resets again at the next milestone anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does Ranked mode launch in Marathon?
It already launched — Ranked went live on Saturday, March 21, 2026 in Season 1, came back on Sunday, June 14 with Season 2 on new rewards and progression terms, and was wiped along with everything else by the Nightfall Refresh on October 6, 2026. Ranked is part of the Sponsored Queues rotation, which now runs every weekend from Thursday through Monday for the rest of Nightfall Refresh, repeating a three-week cycle (Sponsored Perimeter, Sponsored Marsh, Sponsored Night Marsh) until Symbiosis lands on December 8.
What level do I need to access Ranked in Marathon?
You must reach Runner Level 25 before you can access the Ranked playlist. Because the October 6 reset wiped Runner levels, everyone is climbing back to that threshold again — the refresh's +30% Cradle XP and cheaper Armory costs are what make the re-grind shorter than the first time.
How does the gear ante system work in Ranked?
Your loadout must meet a minimum credit value to queue. The two Ranked brackets run at a 3,000-credit gear ante for the low-stakes ladder and a 10,000-credit ante for high stakes, and your equipped Holotag both gates entry and sets the score target you must extract with to gain rank points.
What are the rank tiers in Marathon Ranked?
There are 6 ranks: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Pinnacle. Each rank has 3 tiers. You're rewarded based on your highest rank achieved during the season, not your current standing.
Does Ranked mode work with solo players or only crews?
Solo queue is not a Ranked option. Update 1.1.0.3 on June 23 removed the ability to select Solo queue in Ranked, with Bungie stating it was never intended and did not work as players expected; the design is that crews of all sizes drop into the same matches. If you want a genuinely solo Marathon experience, that is Vault Breaker, where Update 1.1.9.2 hands solo players 50% more Tier 1 and Tier 2 event currency.
