Mortal Shell II Best Starting Shell: Tiel, Proxima, or Eredrim First?
Picking the wrong first Shell in Mortal Shell II can turn the opening hours into a grind. Here is the exact call on Tiel vs Proxima vs Eredrim, with routes and early-game tradeoffs.
Mortal Shell II Best Starting Shell: Tiel, Proxima, or Eredrim First?
The prologue ends, Harros vanishes, and suddenly you are standing in Fainweald with an empty body and a bad attitude. Your first Shell choice sets the tone for the next several hours, and Mortal Shell II is generous enough that three strong options sit close to the start. Tiel rewards stealth and burst, Proxima is a gold-farming tank, and Eredrim is a boss-killing Break machine. None of the three require you to clear a dungeon gate-first, but they are not equal in effort or payoff. Here is the call.

Prerequisites Before Your First Shell Hunt
- Clear the prologue. Harros is gone after this; do not sink Glimpse into him.
- Reach the Widow’s Overlook beacon. This is the only active beacon in Fainweald at the start and the launch point for both Tiel and Proxima.
- Optional: visit Zhirelle in Marrow Keep. She can drop a vague zone marker for 3 Glimpse, but the routes below are short enough that you do not need it.
- Know your Glimpse budget. You can fully upgrade about two Shells on a first run, so decide your mains early.
Tiel vs Proxima vs Eredrim: Early-Game Route and Stats
The three early Shells solve different problems. The table sums up the tradeoff before you commit to a route.
| Trait | Tiel the Acolyte | Proxima the Broodseeker | Eredrim the Venerable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role | Stealth / burst | Tank / control | Boss Breaker |
| Active | Lingering Shadow (manual invis + Shadow Strike) | Biosampler (hook pull + Lightning) | Shoulder Bash / Ethereal Diapason |
| Passive | Shadow Dash (perfect dodge -> Shadow + Stagger) | Grafted Armour (15% mitigate, 50% reduction) | Executioner (low-HP execute, Slaughterer stacks) |
| Distance from start | SE of Widow’s Overlook, short walk | Shattered Beacon, NE of Blackridge Pass | Citadel of Penance, longer trip |
| Boss required? | No | No | Yes (Warden) |
| Standout value | No enemy counters invisibility | Only Shell that farms Coin | Fully upgraded Shoulder Bash breaks a boss in two hits |
Tiel the Acolyte — Why He Is the Default First Pick
Location: Open grave in a clearing southeast of Widow’s Overlook, just south of Mushroom Village. Action: Head southeast from the beacon, clear the cultists, pass the large tree and flying enemies, enter the torch-lit wooden doorway. Tiel is in a grave on the left. Outcome: Interact and play the memory. Shadow Dash turns a perfect dodge into a few seconds of invisibility that also builds boss Stagger, and Lingering Shadow lets you go invisible on command. No enemy in the game sees through it. Even with zero upgrades he is viable, which is why he is the recommendation for a first run.
Proxima the Broodseeker — The Forgiving Tank That Pays You
Location: Shattered Beacon dungeon, northeast of Blackridge Pass, beside the Crumbling Tunnel. Action: From Widow’s Overlook go northeast, push through the enemies, enter the glowing beacon. Proxima is on a coffin on the first level, unguarded. Outcome: Grafted Armour gives a flat 15% chance to cut incoming melee or ranged damage by 50% and prevent stagger. Upgraded Biosampler harvests biosamples you sell to Merrick for Coin, the only active gold farm in the game. Pick her if you want to soak hits while learning the combat.
Eredrim the Venerable — The Boss Specialist Worth the Longer Walk
Location: Citadel of Penance, reached via the Citadel Gate Lever (Lithopod drop) or the candle teleport near One-Legged Wolf. Action: Take the lift to the central arena, interact with the coin pouch to start the Warden, win, loot the knight’s corpse. Outcome: Shoulder Bash deals heavy Break, Ethereal Diapason is an AoE Break shockwave, and Executioner lets you finish low-HP enemies and bank Slaughterer stacks from Ripostes. A fully upgraded Shoulder Bash fully breaks a boss in two uses, so you can Riposte bosses repeatedly. Grab him once bosses become the wall, not before.
Where New Players Actually Trip Up
- Thinking the choice is permanent. It is not. Unlock all three and swap freely; the only real commitment is Glimpse spent on upgrades.
- Skipping Proxima’s economy. If you ever plan to upgrade weapons or sidearms, her biosample-to-Merrick loop is the most reliable Coin source in the game.
- Rushing Eredrim too early. The Warden is a real fight and the Citadel trip is longer. Tiel or Proxima get you further faster.
- Wasting Glimpse on Harros. He is gone at prologue end; any Glimpse dumped into him is wasted.
What Each Starting Shell Unlocks for the Rest of the Run
| Shell | Long-term payoff |
|---|---|
| Tiel | Invisible boss approaches, safe exploration, strong crit identity |
| Proxima | Sustain tank, 15% mitigation, steady Coin income |
| Eredrim | Boss Riposte loops, Break-focused clears |
Pick Tiel to stop sweating the early game, Proxima if you want to learn while tanking and stacking Coin, and Eredrim the moment a boss actually blocks you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best first Shell in Mortal Shell II?
Tiel. His invisibility has no counter and trivializes early elites and bosses, and he is a short walk from Widow's Overlook. You can run him unupgraded and still feel broken.
Can I get both Tiel and Proxima early?
Yes. Both are minutes apart in Fainweald and neither needs a boss kill, so unlock both and swap as the fight demands.
Is Eredrim worth grabbing before Proxima?
Only if bosses are your wall. Eredrim needs the Warden dead in the Citadel of Penance, a longer trip, but his Break loop is the strongest boss tool in the game.
Does the starting Shell choice lock me in?
No. Shells are swappable at any time; the choice only shapes your first few hours and where you spend your limited Glimpse.
