Mortal Shell II: Every Playable Shell, Ability Tree, and Unlock Location

Mortal Shell II gives you nine playable Shells, but only eight survive past the prologue. Harros the Vassal is a tutorial crutch that vanishes when the real game begins. The other eight are permanent bodies, each with an active ability, a passive, and an upgrade tree fed by Glimpse at Zhirelle the Shellkeeper. This guide lays out what every Shell does and where to dig it up.

What You Need Before Hunting the Nine Shells

  • Finish the prologue. Harros is your only Shell until the opening sequence ends. Do not waste Glimpse on him.
  • Reach Marrow Keep. The central hub is where Zhirelle the Shellkeeper lives. Talk to her once to unlock Glimpse spending on Shell Bonding.
  • Stock Glimpse. You have enough for roughly two fully upgraded Shells on a first run, so pick your mains before grinding.
  • Optional map markers. Pay Zhirelle 3 Glimpse per Shell for a vague zone marker; Genessa is excluded.

Tiel the Acolyte — Stealth Assassin in a Grave Southeast of Widow’s Overlook

Location: Clearing south of Mushroom Village, southeast of the Widow’s Overlook beacon. Action: Follow the downhill path, clear the cultists, pass the tree and flying enemies, enter the torch-lit doorway. Tiel is half-buried in a grave on the left. Outcome: Interact and play the memory. His invisibility has no in-game counter, making him the safest early pick and a boss-pwn machine.

Proxima the Broodseeker — Tank-and-Gold Engine Inside the Shattered Beacon

Location: Shattered Beacon dungeon, northeast of Blackridge Pass, beside the Crumbling Tunnel. Action: Enter the glowing beacon, go to the first level. Proxima lies on a coffin with no guards. Outcome: Her upgraded Biosampler harvests biosamples you sell to Merrick for Coin, the only Shell that farms currency.

Eredrim the Venerable — Boss Breaker Behind the Warden in the Citadel of Penance

Location: Citadel of Penance, via the Citadel Gate Lever or the candle teleport near One-Legged Wolf. Action: Take the lift to the central arena, interact with the coin pouch to start the Warden fight, win, loot the corpse. Outcome: A fully upgraded Shoulder Bash breaks a boss in two hits, letting you Riposte bosses on a loop.

Gragu the Insatiable — Heart of Vatra Errand

Location: One-Legged Wolf Tavern, then the Temple of Vatra east of it. Action: Exhaust Gragu’s dialogue, grab the Heart of Vatra from the temple statue, return it. He bites it and dies, leaving the Shell. Outcome: A sustain-and-burst body; strong versus bosses but clumsy versus mobs.

Smert the Apostate — Blood Offering at Prophet’s Rest

Location: Outskirts of Nochte, west of Fainweald swamps, at Prophet’s Rest. Action: Fill the three ritual pools with Blood Offerings. Each offering ejects you from your Shell and costs a health state, so recover before the next. Outcome: Smert’s body glows; claim the time-stop Shell. High risk, high reward.

Sariel the Endless — Kill Him Twice in the Chamber of Becoming

Location: SE Mammon near Silent Steps Beacon, then the Chamber of Becoming. Action: Beat Sariel above ground, follow him in, and destroy the four stone tablets before the final kill or he keeps resurrecting. Outcome: Claim the Shell and the Clockwork Scythe in one trip.

Genessa the Wayward — Censer Quest From Marrow Keep

Location: Marrow Keep (dialogue), then a red-spectre field near Abbey Entrance. Action: Exhaust Genessa’s dialogue, fight Sester Secundus via the lantern teleport, return the Sester’s Censer to her. Outcome: A summoner with a second life via Duality. Cannot be map-marked.

Lazlo the Justicar — Highest HP Behind Vellen

Location: Western Ruins of Mammon, underground cathedral. Action: Fight down to Vellen, High Lord of Mammon, win, continue to the body. Outcome: A pure tank with 10% flat reduction and AoE shockwaves.

Glimpse Economy and Other Traps Before You Commit

  • Two-Shell cap. You have enough Glimpse for only two fully upgraded Shells on a first run. Spreading thin leaves every body half-built.
  • Map markers are vague. Zhirelle’s 3-Glimpse marker is a zone, not a pin. Genessa is unmarkable, so learn her route.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Shells are there in Mortal Shell II?

Nine in total. Eight are permanent unlocks scattered across the open world, and Harros the Vassal is only usable during the prologue before he vanishes once the game opens up.

Which Shell should I upgrade first?

Tiel and Proxima are both reachable within minutes of the prologue and cover stealth and tank playstyles. You only have enough Glimpse for two fully upgraded Shells on a first run, so commit early.

Do I need to beat a boss for every Shell?

No. Most Shells are free pickups. Only Eredrim (defeat the Warden) and Sariel (defeat him twice, breaking the stones) require a boss kill to claim the corpse.

Can I pin every Shell on the map?

Zhirelle the Shellkeeper can mark a Shell's general area for 3 Glimpse, but the marker is a vague zone, not a precise pin. Genessa cannot be marked on the map at all.
