Crimson Desert advanced Guide: Welcome to Pywel

This page started life as a pre-launch preview writeup, and several of its claims did not survive March. Here is the post-launch version: the camp expansion math, the trade-post economy numbers, the Abyss Link respec system, and every preview-era assumption that turned out wrong.

Welcome to the harsh yet beautiful world of Pywel.

Crimson Desert Cover

This page has an unusual problem: I wrote it ten days before the game existed. The version that shipped in March was a synthesis of gamescom previews, developer interviews, and pre-order marketing, and I published it as an advanced guide, which it had no business being.

Seven months and roughly thirty patches later, a lot of it did not survive contact with the release. So this is the rewritten version, built from Pearl Abyss’s own patch notes and store documentation rather than from preview handouts - and there’s a section at the bottom listing exactly which preview claims turned out wrong, because you deserve to know which of your bookmarks are poisoned.

The Premise, Corrected

Pearl Abyss’s own summary of the game: Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure set on the continent of Pywel. Join Kliff on his journey to rebuild the Greymane faction and to save the land from a looming threat. From vast wilderness and cities to ruins and the mysterious Abyss, forge your path through battles and discovery.

That gives you the actual skeleton, and it differs from what I wrote in three ways worth naming.

Kliff is the protagonist. Not Clovis. The Greymane company is what he rebuilds, and the roster you command is a gameplay system, not the narrative camera. Damiane and Oongka become playable as the main story progresses, each with a separate skill tree, and patch notes confirm they got their own open-world utility abilities in 1.03.00 - Axiom Force and Nature’s Snare for both, plus reworks of Damiane’s Shield Toss and Oongka’s Scatter Shot.

Pywel is not a desert. The name is the game’s, not the biome’s. What actually shipped is wilderness, farmland, coastal villages, castle towns, and a cold-restricted otherworld called the Abyss. The region and settlement names that appear throughout the patch notes are Hernand, Demeniss, Delesyia, Pailune, Tommaso, Urdavah, and Varnia - these are the towns and camp hubs you’ll route between, and Pailune in particular got a major accessibility and expansion pass in 1.03.00. Our open-world map guide covers the region layout; this page covers the systems.

There is no multiplayer. The BlackSpace Engine was built with multiplayer support because the project began as an MMO, and preview coverage - including my own - reported “online multiplayer functionality” as though it were shipping. Crimson Desert is single-player. The co-op you may have seen discussed is a modder’s project, announced in an October 2026 community roundup, not a Pearl Abyss feature.

The Camp Is Your Build Sheet

The most consequential change since launch is that the Greymane camp went from a quest hub to the game’s storage and economy backbone.

Private storage scales with camp expansion. Patch 1.02.00 (April 4, 2026) raised capacity from a starting 240 slots to a maximum of 1000, tied to the camp’s five expansion stages: +100 slots at each of the first four, then +360 at the final one. Add the earlier 1.00.03 change that introduced Private Storage at Howling Hill Camp, and the entire March-era anxiety about bag slots is obsolete. If an older guide tells you to sell everything you pick up, check whether it predates April.

Camp expansion is therefore a priority, not a side activity. The stages unlock through faction quests, and the payoff is a thousand-slot chest that changes how you approach mining, crafting materials, and trade goods. The inventory and backpack guide has the bag-slot ladder for the early game before you have storage; the mercenary troop guide covers the comrade dispatch system that drives camp progression.

One quality-of-life note from 1.03.00 worth knowing: item management got a bulk action. Grouping and ungrouping items in your bag now processes everything at once, and item details are viewable inside the storage screen. Those sound trivial. After moving ore by hand for three weeks, they aren’t.

The Trading Economy Has Actual Numbers Now

Patch 1.16.00 (August 1, 2026) rebuilt trade, and unlike most balance patches it published the mechanics rather than just saying “improvements.”

  • 133 new trading posts were added, appearing as you progress the quests tied to them, with 7 wagon workshops functioning as intermediate posts in Hernand, Demeniss, Delesyia, Pailune, Tommaso, Urdavah, and Varnia.
  • Royal trading posts quadrupled the prices they pay for trade goods, and wagons no longer disappear after you deliver to one.
  • Prices are location- and volume-sensitive. Pearl Abyss explicitly changed the system so that goods prices drop when too many of one item are sold at a single location, and stated that you make higher profit trading at posts that are hard to reach by wagon. That is the whole strategy in one sentence: don’t dump into the convenient market.
  • Packaging and stacking changed. Packaged trade goods stack to 10 or 100 depending on value, unpackaged items stack to 5 or 50 per slot, high-value goods got 24 new types plus 4 regular ones, and a single trade good can now be sold instead of requiring a full load. You can also move goods between your horse and wagon.
  • The map gained a Trade tab showing trading posts, royal posts, wagon workshops and routes, with filters and per-post market prices, plus an average buy price readout.

Two things to watch if you trade seriously. First, 1.16.00 also increased trade goods lost when retrieving your horse or wagon or destroying a wagon - the patch raised profit and raised the penalty on dying mid-route, so an ill-advised sprint through bandit country is now more expensive. Second, 1.18.00 fixed a bug where high-value trade goods could be stacked and loaded in quantities of up to 100, and fixed merchants not appearing at stalls. If your profits look impossible in a save from late July, they were a bug.

Research costs also moved: 1.18.00 changed the resource required for research from silvers to camp funds, which ties research directly into the camp system instead of your liquid cash.

The Enhanced update (2.00.00, August 25, 2026, free for everyone) is the single biggest mechanical change to progression.

Abyss Link. When a character spends Abyss Artifacts to learn a skill, an equivalent number of Abyss Links is granted to the other playable characters. Each character then spends their own Abyss Links to learn skills. The design intent is obvious: the old system punished you for investing in Kliff at the expense of Damiane and Oongka, and this flattens that.

Per-character respec. Skill progression can now be reset individually per character instead of all characters at once, and the Abyss Links that character used are refunded on reset.

The migration was not gentle. Adding Abyss Link reset all existing skill progression the first time the game was launched after the update, refunding everything previously spent, including Abyss Artifacts. If you read a thread from late August about everyone’s builds being wiped, that was intentional and compensated.

New-game carryover. After completing all main quests, you can carry Abyss Links and other in-game currency from an existing save into a new game. Plus 8 new Kliff skills that unlock past a certain story point.

For what to spend on first, the early stamina and stat-points guide and the Abyss Cores class priority breakdown are current; the Enhanced new skills and respec guide covers this system in detail.

Combat Settings That Change How The Game Feels

These are all real menu options that did not exist in March, and they solve more complaints than any stat allocation.

OptionWhereEffect
Lock-on Camera RotationSettings - InputThree modes since 1.18.00, replacing a simple enable/disable. Manual: you rotate the camera freely while locked on. Semi-auto: you can rotate within a limited range. Auto: camera stays on target. Pick Manual if you get blindsided in group fights, Auto if you want the game to handle framing
Movement ControlsMain Menu - Others - Settings - InputBasic and Classic, added in 1.02.00. Basic: hold the sprint key to accelerate, with stamina consumed at set intervals on mounts. Classic: tap the sprint key repeatedly, stamina consumed per press
Perfect Dodge Window / evasion optionsSettings - Difficulty1.04.00 expanded evasion options alongside the input preset system
Easy / Normal / Hard difficultySettingsAdded in 1.04.00 (April 23, 2026). If you bounced off launch-version combat, the difficulty you were stuck with is not the one you have now
Colourblind and photosensitivity optionsSettings - Accessibility1.04.00. Related: 1.03.00 added Minimum Font Size and five camera sliders (visual range, vertical and horizontal offset, auto-follow, lookahead) under Others - Accessibility
Fast Forward SpeedOthers - Language & GameplayUp to 4x, added in 1.03.00; 1.02.00-era dialogue scenes without letterboxing became fast-forwardable in the same pass

On the combat side, patches adjusted the thing people complained about most: 1.03.00 improved lock-on during boss battles and made hard lock-on hold from further distances, but removed lock-on from certain larger bosses - so if a huge enemy refuses to lock, that is now the intended behaviour, not a bug. Abyss Nexus teleportation works while mounted, falling, swimming, or climbing walls as of the same patch, which removes most of the “I have to dismount to fast travel” friction.

For boss-specific patterns rather than settings, use the all-bosses pattern guide and the hardest-fights retest list, both of which were re-run after the Enhanced patch.

Knowledge, Quests, and the Map

1.18.00 (August 15, 2026) added Quests as a knowledge category with eight sub-categories: Main Quests, Faction Quests, Investigation Quests, Research Quests, Daily Life Quests, Guide, Archive Records, and Constellations, with retroactive grants for quests you’d already finished. Same patch made animal knowledge obtainable by picking an animal up instead of killing it - a small change with a large consequence for anyone completing creature knowledge on a pacifist run - and separated visited from unvisited caves, and restored from unrestored Abyss locations, on the world map with different icons.

It also changed the Abyss puzzle surface: 1.03.00 made Abyss Nexuses easier to discover, improved certain Abyss puzzle convenience, made gimmick-attachment availability more readable when using Force Palm, and gave lanterns and Blinding Flash more hint function. If you bounced off the Abyss in March because it never told you what was interactive, that feedback was heard.

Preview Claims That Did Not Survive

The March version of this page asserted all of the following. Each is now wrong, outdated, or unsubstantiated.

Claim I made pre-launchWhat actually happened
You play as Clovis, sole survivor of the Grey Mane company, ambushed by the Black BearThe shipped game stars Kliff, rebuilding the Greymane faction in Pywel. The story framing changed during development, as the studio’s own summary describes it
The game combines single-player narrative with online multiplayer functionalitySingle-player only. No official multiplayer shipped, and the co-op being built is a community mod
Launch on March 20, 2026March 19, 2026, per the Steam release date
Standard $59.99, Deluxe $79.99, Collector’s $149.99The Steam listing today is Crimson Desert Enhanced at $69.99, and Enhanced was a free update for existing owners on all platforms. [Unverified] I can’t confirm the current edition ladder from the store API, so treat any three-tier price table you see as historical
Five seamless regions in a cold and callous desertFive regions, yes; desert, no. Pywel ships as wilderness, farmland, coast, castle towns, and the Abyss
PS5 Pro running “near-40fps in 4K quality mode”A preview-build measurement presented as a spec. Treat all launch-window console numbers as superseded, especially after Pearl Abyss confirmed in September that BlackSpace still has unsolved performance scaling in dense scenes
No microtransactions, confirmed[Unverified] I have not found a post-launch Pearl Abyss statement standing behind this, and no store-page monetisation breakdown either. Do not buy on the strength of my March sentence
Boss named Hexe Marie as a headline encounterPreview-build content reference. Not something I can confirm against the shipped game’s boss list, so it’s out of this page

What To Do With Your Save Right Now

  1. Finish camp expansion stages for the 1000-slot storage ceiling before you farm anything. It changes what you bother picking up.
  2. Route trade to inconvenient posts and rotate what you sell, because volume-based price drops are now the actual mechanic.
  3. Respec with intent. Per-character resets and Abyss Links mean an experiment costs nothing permanent, which was not true in March.
  4. Check your input settings - Lock-on Camera Rotation and Movement Controls both have options that fix long-standing gripes.
  5. Update past 2.03.02 before the DLC. That patch fixed map icons for newly discovered objects, the “Mysterious Pot” Grimnir appearance bug, and an Ether Rest Abyss progression blocker where the power core would not register.
  6. Charting the Unknown lands October 29, 2026 - 22:00 GMT / 15:00 PT, October 30 at 07:00 KST. It adds your own ship, island hopping, underwater ruins and sunken treasure, naval combat, expanded building and housing, commercial properties, new combat moves and large foes. Our delay prep guide lists what to finish first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you play as in Crimson Desert?

Kliff, on a journey to rebuild the Greymane faction across the continent of Pywel. Damiane and Oongka join as additional playable characters later in the main story, each with their own skill trees. The protagonist is not named Clovis - that came from preview-era materials this page repeated before launch, and it is wrong.

Is Crimson Desert a multiplayer or MMO game?

No. It shipped and still runs as a single-player open-world action-adventure. Pearl Abyss designed the BlackSpace Engine with multiplayer in mind because Crimson Desert started life as an MMO project, but the released game has no official co-op or online component. The co-op that exists is a community mod, not a feature.

How much private storage does Crimson Desert have?

Private storage at your camp starts at 240 slots and scales with the Greymane camp expansion, which has 5 stages. Patch 1.02.00 raised the ceiling to a maximum of 1000 slots: +100 slots at each of the first four expansions and +360 at the final one. Before that patch landed on April 4, 2026, the storage situation was genuinely tight, which is why older guides tell you to hoard nothing.

Can you respec individual characters in Crimson Desert?

Yes, since the 2.00.00 Enhanced update. Skill progression can now be reset per character instead of resetting everyone at once, and the Abyss Links that character spent are refunded when you reset them. Note the side effect: adding Abyss Link reset every existing skill progression the first time you launched after the update, and refunded the resources including Abyss Artifacts.

What is the Abyss Link system?

Abyss Link is a skill-learning resource added in the Enhanced update. When one character spends Abyss Artifacts to learn a skill, an equal number of Abyss Links is granted to the other playable characters, and each character can spend their own Abyss Links to learn skills. After you finish all main quests, you can also carry Abyss Links and other currency into a new save file.

When does Crimson Desert's first expansion release?

Charting the Unknown moves to October 29, 2026 - 22:00 GMT, 15:00 PT, which is 07:00 KST on October 30 in Asia. Pearl Abyss pushed it two weeks from the original October 15 date on September 30, citing polish and stability for roughly a thousand open-world activities. Pre-orders carry the Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane.
