Preparation: Gear Check Before Boss Fights

Boss-tier ARC machines aren’t regular patrols. You can’t just run up and spray them down. Before you engage any of these threats, make sure your loadout is built for sustained damage output and survivability.

If you haven’t already, read through the ARC machine weak points guide first — this article builds on that foundation and focuses specifically on the three boss-tier enemies you’ll encounter in the field.

Recommended boss-fight kit:

  • Primary: Armor-piercing rifle or shotgun (Aphelion or Armor Breaker class weapons)
  • Secondary: Shotgun for close-range emergency damage
  • Grenades: 4-6 EMP grenades minimum, plus 2 fragmentation grenades
  • Consumables: 3 medkits, 2 armor patches, 1 stim
  • Skill tree: Prioritize damage-to-machines and explosive damage nodes — check the skill tree guide for the exact builds

I’ve wiped three full squads by rushing into Bastion fights without EMP grenades. These machines have shield phases and add summons — if you can’t stun them and clear the adds, you’ll get overwhelmed. Bring the right tools.

Bastion: The Walking Fortress

The Bastion is the first boss-tier enemy most players encounter, and it’s a brutal introduction to what ARC machines can do at the top end. Think of it as a walking tank — massive, heavily shielded, and armed with a high-rate minigun that shreds cover in seconds.

Weak Points

The Bastion has three exploitable weak points:

  1. Rear Yellow Barrels — These are the primary damage multiplier. Explosives tossed at the rear barrels deal massive damage. If you can get behind the Bastion, a single grenade volley can strip 20-30% of its health bar.
  2. Leg Joints — Damaging the leg joints doesn’t deal huge damage directly, but it slows the Bastion’s movement speed significantly. A slowed Bastion is easier to kite and gives your team more time to line up shots on the barrels.
  3. Shell Covers — The upper body armor plates can be blown off with explosives, exposing internal components for direct gunfire. Once the covers are gone, your rifle damage increases substantially.

Attack Patterns

  • Minigun Sweep — The Bastion’s primary attack. It tracks targets with a high-rate minigun for 3-second bursts. The turret turns fast, so don’t try to outrun it in the open. Use hard cover and peek for shots between sweeps.
  • ARC Minion Summon — Periodically, the Bastion deploys smaller ARC units. These are fragile but annoying — they flank you while the Bastion keeps up suppressive fire.
  • Charge — At close range, the Bastion can lunge forward. If you see it rear back, break line of sight immediately.

Kill Strategy

Phase 1 (100% → 60% health): One player draws aggro from the front using hard cover. The rest of the team flanks to the rear and targets the yellow barrels with explosives. If you can’t get behind it, focus leg joints to slow it down, then circle to the rear.

Phase 2 (60% → 30% health): The Bastion starts summoning more aggressively. Assign one player to handle adds while the DPS continues on the barrels. Use EMP grenades to stun the Bastion during summon cycles — this gives a 4-5 second window of free damage.

Phase 3 (30% → 0%): The Bastion’s minigun fires faster and it charges more frequently. Stay at mid-range. Pop the shell covers with a final explosive volley, then dump all remaining ammo into the exposed internals.

From my testing, a coordinated four-person squad can down a Bastion in under 90 seconds if they nail the flank positioning. Solo, expect a 3-4 minute fight with the right loadout and plenty of cover usage.

Matriarch: The Leg-Crusher Event Boss

The Matriarch is an event boss — you won’t find it on regular patrols. It spawns during the Matriarch Event, a large-scale encounter that triggers in specific map zones. This thing is massive, has multiple attack patterns, and demands coordinated team play.

Weak Points

The Matriarch’s damage model is different from regular ARC machines:

  1. Leg Joints (Primary) — The legs are the main weak point. Focus all firepower here during the opening phase. Destroying leg joints slows the Matriarch and exposes its underside for bonus damage.
  2. Body Core (Secondary) — Once the legs are sufficiently damaged, the body core becomes exposed. This is where you dump your highest-damage weapons for the kill.

Attack Patterns

The Matriarch has a diverse moveset that keeps you guessing:

  • Rocket Barrage — Launches a spread of rockets at player positions. The targeting is telegraphed with red markers on the ground — move out of the marked zones before impact.
  • Gas Mortars — Fires mortars that leave lingering toxic fog. These area-denial zones shrink your available fighting space. Don’t stand in the gas — reposition continuously.
  • Flashbangs — Blinding grenades that disable your aim temporarily. If you get hit, fall back behind cover and let your teammates maintain pressure.
  • Energy Shield — The Matriarch periodically deploys an energy shield that blocks all bullet damage. When the shield goes up, stop shooting — you’re wasting ammo. Focus on clearing the ARC minions it summons during this phase.
  • Minion Summon — Calls in waves of smaller ARC machines. Clear them fast or they’ll overwhelm your team while the Matriarch is shielded.

Kill Strategy

Opening: Spread out across the arena. The Matriarch’s rockets and gas mortars punish clustered teams. Assign positions so everyone has room to dodge.

Leg Phase: All DPS targets the legs. Use armor-piercing weapons — the Aphelion and Armor Breaker class weapons are ideal here. The best solo build works if you’re running with a partner, but a full squad of four makes this phase trivial.

Shield Phase: When the energy shield activates, switch to crowd control. Stun skills and EMP grenades keep the adds manageable. Do NOT waste ammo on the shield — it has a fixed duration and drops after 8-10 seconds.

Core Phase: Once the legs are down and the shield cycle repeats, the body core is exposed. Stack your highest burst damage and burn it down. The Matriarch becomes more aggressive here — expect faster rocket volleys and more frequent flashbangs.

Pro tip: The Matriarch’s gas mortars actually damage ARC minions too. If you’re desperate, position yourself so the gas clouds drift toward the adds. I’ve seen this accidentally save a wiped squad once.

Bombardier: The Artillery Nightmare

The Bombardier is a long-range specialist — a slow, heavily armed machine that lobs explosives from across the map. It looks like a bulked-up Bastion variant with fragile plating, and it’s the most soloable of the three boss-tier enemies.

Weak Points

  1. Rear Yellow Barrels — Same as the Bastion. Explosives to the rear deal massive damage. The Bombardier’s barrels are slightly more exposed, making them easier to hit.
  2. Leg Joints — Destroying these reduces movement speed. Since the Bombardier already moves slowly, this is less critical than on the Bastion — but still useful for kiting.
  3. Fragile Hull — The Bombardier’s body plating is thinner than the Bastion’s. Direct gunfire to the body deals good damage, especially after the shell covers are removed.

Attack Patterns

  • Long-Range Lobbing — The Bombardier’s signature move. It launches explosive shells in high arcs from extreme distance. The shells have a splash radius — keep moving and don’t cluster with teammates.
  • Close-Range Area Pulse — If you get within 15 meters, the Bombardier unleashes a devastating omnidirectional blast. This is an instant-kill zone. Never go melee-range on this thing.
  • Guide Deployment — The Bombardier is often accompanied by Guide units that reveal hidden players. These small ARC machines are fragile but dangerous — they negate your cover advantage. Kill the Guides first, then focus the Bombardier.

Kill Strategy

Range management is everything. Stay at 30-50 meters. Close enough to land shots consistently, far enough to dodge the explosive lob pattern.

Step 1: Clear any Guide units in the area. They expose your position and make dodging the Bombardier’s shells much harder.

Step 2: Target the rear barrels with explosives. Two to three grenade volleys should crack them open.

Step 3: Switch to primary weapon and focus the exposed internals. The Bombardier’s hull is thin — rifle damage shreds it quickly once the barrels are compromised.

Step 4: If it tries to reposition, hit the leg joints. A slowed Bombardier is a dead Bombardier.

Solo tip: The Bombardier is the best boss-tier enemy to practice on if you’re running solo. Its slow movement and predictable lob pattern give you plenty of time to react. I’ve killed it solo in under 3 minutes using a shotgun-and-grenade loadout with aggressive mid-range positioning.

General Boss Fight Principles

These rules apply to every boss-tier ARC machine in the game:

1. Never fight alone if you can avoid it. Boss-tier enemies have shield phases, add summons, and area attacks that punish solo players. A duo is the minimum. A squad of four makes these fights manageable.

2. Learn the shield cycle. When the boss deploys an energy shield, stop shooting. Clear adds. Wait for the shield to drop. Shooting through the shield wastes ammo and teaches nothing.

3. Explosives > bullets for opening damage. The rear barrel weak points on both the Bastion and Bombardier are designed for explosive damage. Use grenades to crack them open, then switch to rifles for sustained DPS.

4. Kiting works on all three. None of these bosses are fast. Leg joint damage slows them further. If you maintain distance and keep moving, you can control the pace of every fight.

5. Clear adds before they become a problem. The adds from boss summons are individually weak but dangerous in numbers. Assign at least one player to add control at all times.

Important Notes

  • Boss-tier enemies don’t respawn within the same match. Once you kill a Bastion, Matriarch, or Bombardier, it’s gone for that run. Plan your engagement timing carefully.
  • Ammo conservation matters. Boss fights burn through grenades and special ammo fast. If you’re running the crafting guide loop, prioritize crafting EMP grenades and armor-piercing rounds before your next boss attempt.
  • The Matriarch event has a time limit. If your team doesn’t kill it within the event window, it retreats and you get no loot. Bring enough DPS to finish the fight.
  • Boss-tier enemies can appear in pairs. I’ve run into two Bastions on the same patrol route in Buried City. If you see one, assume there might be another nearby and conserve resources accordingly.

Loot & Rewards

Each boss-tier enemy drops valuable crafting materials:

Bastion drops:

  • ARC metals (common)
  • Various cores (uncommon to rare)
  • Mechanical parts (common)
  • Reactors (rare)
  • Magnetic accelerators (rare)
  • High-performance steel (uncommon)
  • Synthetic resins (uncommon)

Bombardier drops:

  • Alloys (common)
  • Energy cores (uncommon)
  • Heavy steel (uncommon)
  • Advanced power cells (rare)
  • Mechanical parts (common)
  • Medium weapon components (uncommon)
  • Bomb cells (rare)
  • Flare ammo (uncommon)

Matriarch drops:

  • High-tier ARC components (exact loot table varies by event difficulty)
  • Rare weapon blueprints (event-exclusive)
  • Large quantities of crafting materials

The rare drops — reactors, magnetic accelerators, advanced power cells — are the primary reason to hunt these bosses. They feed directly into endgame crafting and weapon upgrades.

Boss-tier ARC machines in Arc Raiders aren’t damage sponges designed to waste your time — they’re puzzles with health bars. Each one has specific weak points, predictable attack cycles, and a damage window that rewards positioning over raw firepower.

The Bastion teaches you to flank and use cover. The Matriarch teaches you to manage area denial and shield phases. The Bombardier teaches you range control and target priority. Master all three, and you’ve mastered the PvE combat loop.

Start with the Bombardier if you’re solo. Bring a squad for the Matriarch. And never, ever stand in the gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you defeat the Matriarch in Arc Raiders?

The Matriarch's primary weak points are its leg joints. Focus all firepower there to slow it down, then rotate to the body core once the legs are damaged. You need at least a duo squad — one player draws aggro while the other targets weak spots. Armor-piercing weapons like the Aphelion and Armor Breaker are highly recommended.

What is the Bastion's weak spot in Arc Raiders?

The Bastion has three exploitable weak points: the yellow barrels on its rear, the leg joints, and the shell covers on its upper body. Hit the rear barrels with explosives for maximum damage. Damage the leg joints to reduce its movement speed. Pop the shell covers to expose internal components for direct gunfire.

Is the Bombardier easy to solo in Arc Raiders?

The Bombardier is one of the more soloable boss-tier enemies because of its fragile hull plating. Stay at mid-range to avoid its close-range area pulse, target the yellow barrels on its back, and destroy leg joints to kite it. Clear any accompanying Guide units first — they reveal hidden players and make the fight much harder.
