The October 8 Drop And The Free Weekend
Frozen Trail goes live Thursday, October 8, 2026, and it is the largest update Arc Raiders has shipped in a game that has been running for nearly a year. The lead-up tells you how much weight Embark is putting on it: Live Update 1.45.0 landed September 8 and was announced as the last live update before October 8, the store-only 1.48.0 followed on September 29 with two Misthorn Set colour variants, and the studio then skipped its Tuesday update entirely to clear the runway.
Attached to the launch is the game’s first free-play period:
- Start: October 8 at 11:00 CEST
- End: October 12 at 10:00 CEST
- Platforms: Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
- Access: the full game, no content gates, squad play enabled
Two details from the announcement are worth knowing before you invite anyone in. Free players get the whole Frozen Trail content set, and a brand-new account can drop Pendola Pass straight away if it queues with an account that has already unlocked the map. That is a deliberate design choice: the new map is the social product, and they do not want the free weekend to look like a tutorial island while everyone else is somewhere else.
The other thing to mention to anyone joining this weekend: Embark’s October 2 anti-cheat post confirms that a confirmed cheat now means a lifetime ban with no warning and no second chance, with hardware bans expanding to more devices before the end of the year. Current stack is kernel-level Denuvo, Anybrain, in-house machine-learning behaviour models and human review on bans and appeals, with the Elytra system from THE FINALS planned for testing in Arc Raiders. The honest translation for a new player: cheaters are still a live problem - the studio says so directly - and the response is now punitive rather than gradual.
Pendola Pass: What The Map Actually Is
Pendola Pass is a frozen mountain region past the Rust Belt, described by Embark as an old Italian village and Exodus transport hub that has been isolated long enough for the snow to keep it. The named areas from the content preview:
| Area | Why it matters for routing |
|---|---|
| Old Italian village / town square | Dense vertical buildings, short sightlines, raiders in every doorway |
| Supermarket | Container-rich interior; the kind of POI that pays a full bag on its own |
| Observatory | Isolated high ground, likely a value band magnet |
| Buried train depot | Exodus-linked content, the narrative spine of the map |
| The Emperor crash site | The map’s headline objective and the reason every ARC is moving |
The premise is a downed Emperor-class ARC, the largest known machine type, whose crash drew a swarm of other machines to the site. That gives the map a risk gradient no Rust Belt map has: the closer you get to the prize, the denser the ARC, and the more obvious your route looks to anyone else who read the same map.
Expect it to play harder than Stella Montis. Frozen terrain means slower reading of flanks, and the tether gadgets below change what “unreachable” means on a vertical map.
The Frigate And The Three New ARC
The Frigate is a massive ARC patrol vessel that you board. This is not a external objective you shoot at; the preview describes traversing internal corridors, unlocking routes as you go, and handling intense close-quarters encounters against both ARC and rival raiders. It is the highest-reward and highest-attrition space in the update, and it is where the new Hydra is stationed.
Three new ARC types arrive with Frozen Trail:
- Bully - aggressive and built for close range, with a galloping approach. This is the machine that punishes you for looting with your back turned.
- Skulker - opportunistic. It waits for the fight you are already losing.
- Hydra - a triple-tiered turret aboard the Frigate. Tiered turrets in Arc Raiders mean you usually have to break the layers in order, and a corridor with a Hydra in it is not a gunfight, it is a puzzle.
Weak-point logic carries over from the existing machine set, so the ARC machine weak points guide is still the right reference for the ones that share chassis families. The new trio needs its own entry in the database page, and I will update it once drop tables are confirmed on live servers.
There is also a new map condition called Redirection in the update. Embark’s own preview names it without publishing mechanics, so treat anything you read about what it redirects as unconfirmed until it is live.
New Weapons And Gadgets
Confirmed additions:
- Stiletto - a light-ammo rifle. Light Ammo is the cheapest round in the game at 4 coins per unit, so a light-ammo platform is a budget pick by design.
- Bantam - a revolver. Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal described it as a revolver you can shoot from the hip, which is a strange and interesting thing for an archetype that normally punishes hip fire.
- Grappling hook - movement, and the single biggest change to route planning on a vertical map.
- Two tether gadgets / tether grenades - they bind, pull and move enemies or objects. Read that as a looting tool as much as a combat one: pulling a container out of a defended room is a different risk calculation than entering it.
- A fully functional camera and collectible instruments, which are cosmetics and player-expression systems rather than gear.
The Acoustic Guitar already exists in the item database at a 7,000 coin value, and it doubles as a tool to attract ARC attention. If the new collectible instruments behave the same way, the sound-based lure niche gets more options. For how new guns slot into an existing kit, the weapons ranked guide is the frame of reference; both Stiletto and Bantam will need to earn a tier against what is already there.
Research, Weapon Amplification, And The End Of Blueprint RNG
This is the change I care most about, because it is the one that alters what you farm for.
Frozen Trail adds the Raider Den Extension: Outpost, a modular safehouse where you arrange rooms, decorate, and access high-tier crafting. Inside it is a research table, and the research system lets you find items topside that grant research points, then choose what to unlock - including, per Grøndal, “a number of blueprints”.
Why that matters: Arc Raiders has 77 blueprint items in the game data, and until now your only lever was luck and repetition. Research converts a portion of that into a decision. The catch, from the same presentation: late-game exclusives are reportedly not researchable, including the legendary weapon recipes tied to ARC reactor content. So research smooths the mid-game plateau and leaves the top of the ladder scarce on purpose.
Weapon Amplification is the other Outpost system. It grants select firearms a fifth quality level through outpost research stations, unlocking branching upgrades that change how the weapon behaves - not just its stats. Behaviour-changing upgrades at the top of a weapon ladder is the kind of system that creates a real endgame crafting goal instead of a numbers crawl.
Blueprints still cannot be traded. There is no player-to-player trading or gifting in Arc Raiders, so third-party real-money blueprint markets that appeared in early 2026 are outside the game, against terms, and unrecoverable when they go wrong. The farming routes in the Canto blueprint guide are the only version of that purchase you can actually complete.
Cred Is Dead: The Economy Change Nobody Advertised
Buried in Live Update 1.45.0 on September 8: Cred is retired as a currency, and everything sitting in a balance expired on October 8 unless you spent it. Embark’s instruction was to spend Cred with Shani or on remaining Raider Deck rewards before the update, and to keep anything already claimed.
Their stated reason is a real economy failure: players accumulated Cred fast enough to buy out new decks instantly on release, which emptied the reward ladder of meaning. Fixing that meant killing the currency, not tuning it.
Coins, the currency you get by extracting loot and selling it to the five Speranza traders - Shani, Celeste, Tian Wen, Apollo, Lance - are unaffected. If you want the sell table, item values and the honest coins-per-hour math, that is in the money farming guide, which I rewrote against the live item database before this update.
Reward Passes Replace Raider Decks
Two passes arrive with Frozen Trail, and Embark emphasised that none of the rewards affect gameplay - everything is cosmetic or currency for further unlocks.
Frozen Trail Reward Pass, 60 levels:
- Free track: all new base costumes, plus new cosmetics, weapons, gadgets, items and up to 200 Raider Tokens
- Premium track: all premium variants, modifications and colourways for the new costumes, legendary weapon stencils, hairstyles, and up to 1,150 Raider Tokens
- Premium is bought for 1,150 Raider Tokens, and Embark stated no additional purchases are needed to complete the pass
Legacy Reward Pass: free, and it consolidates the cosmetic rewards and Raider Tokens from every old Raider Deck into one place. Nothing from the decks is lost, which is the correct move - a retired currency with orphaned rewards is how live-service games get review-bombed.
The consumer note: 1,150 tokens is earnable inside the free track’s ceiling only in theory, since the free track caps at 200. If you intend to buy the premium pass, that is real money on a game you already bought, and the payoff is cosmetics and stencils. My recommendation is to finish the free track first, since the pass is not time-limited in the way a deck was.
The PvE Toggle Test, October 13-20
From October 13 to October 20, a limited beta adds a toggle: load into a session where the machines stay lethal but other raiders cannot hurt you.
Embark’s reasoning is in the announcement itself - “We’re seeing a large and growing group of Raiders who come to the Rust Belt for the co-op and the ARC, not fighting with other Raiders. That group has become a core part of our community, so it’s important we learn how to support them properly rather than leave them working around the game.”
That last clause is the tell. Players were already self-segregating - avoiding contacts, using lures instead of guns, farming the quiet corners of the map. A toggle legitimises that playstyle instead of pretending it is a defect.
Three practical reads on the test window:
- It is a training arc. Rehearse Pendola Pass routes, learn container positions and test a kit you cannot afford to lose, with zero raiders to punish you for it.
- It changes the extraction economy of the test servers. Loot you would normally lose to a camped exit is guaranteed if you survive the ARC. Expect the token value of that week to be about learning, not earning.
- Watch what they measure. Whether a permanent PvE mode ships depends on what Embark sees in these eight days, and the free weekend population sample is going to be unusual. Do not read the test’s player counts as a verdict on the game.
For players who want the pacifist route in the normal build right now, the 10 tips to avoid PvP and extract safely methods still work, and the solo build guide covers the kit that survives without starting fights.
Dynamic Loot Zones: Why Your Routes May Stop Testing
The quietest announcement of the cycle came from design director Virgil Watkins on stream: dynamic loot zones are being tested on Pendola Pass, meaning the yellow and red bands that indicate approximate loot value per POI can relocate between sessions.
Arc Raiders currently teaches you the map by value colour. You read the bands, you plan toward the hot end, you extract. Static bands reward memorisation - the third run on the same map is faster than the first because you know what is where. Shifting bands remove that compounding advantage and force you to re-read the map every drop.
I do not think that is a nerf to good players. It is a nerf to route scripts, which is a different thing, and the trade is real: the map becomes less predictable, which also means the same three POIs stop being the same three fights every night. Whether it ships beyond testing has not been announced - Watkins described it as in testing, full stop.
The map loot routes guide covers the routing principles that survive a shuffle: extract-early discipline, trinket priority over stacked scrap, and building a route that flows toward a exit rather than across the map.
First Week Plan
- If you are a veteran: spend any Cred you still had before it expired, then re-level through the new skill tree rework before you commit perks - the skill tree guide needs re-checking against the reworked build, which is exactly the kind of thing I flag when a patch invalidates it.
- Do not bring a Heavy Shield (5,500) into the Frigate on day one. Nobody knows the corridor layouts, and the death tax on an unknown interior is the whole point of the first visit.
- Take the tether grenades. They are the new movement-and-object tools on a vertical map, and early adopters get the routing advantage before everyone else learns what they do.
- Queue Pendola Pass with a friend who has it unlocked if you are on the free weekend; you skip the map gate entirely.
- Check your settings after the update. 1.45.0 already moved the game from Unreal Engine 5.3 to 5.7, which is a rendering-pipeline jump that can change your frame-time profile. The settings and FPS optimisation guide is where to start if a previously stable preset drops frames.
- Wait for the drop tables. New ARC and Frigate loot are not in the public database yet; anything claiming exact Frigate payouts this week is guessing.
Final Take
After going through the official preview, the 1.45.0 notes and the anti-cheat post:
- Frozen Trail is a systems update wearing a map costume. Pendola Pass and the Frigate are the headline, but the research table, Weapon Amplification, the Reward Pass rework and the Cred retirement change how the game plays week to week.
- Blueprint RNG is finally optional, for everything except the late-game legendary recipes.
- The economy got an honesty pass. Cred died because accumulation outpaced the reward ladder, and decks died for the same reason. Coins and traders remain the durable currency.
- The PvE toggle test is the most important experiment in the game’s life, because it decides whether a permanent mode exists - and Embark has said plainly that a large group of players wants it.
- Free weekend plus a new map plus a new mode is the best onboarding moment this game has had. If you have been looking for a week to try it, that week is October 8 to 12.
The caution, and it is the same one I have written about since launch: a fifth quality level, a research tree and a modular safehouse are all more systems in an extraction shooter whose core problem has been sessions, not content volume. Judge Frozen Trail on Friday night queue quality and whether you want to run one more extraction, not on the feature list.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does the Arc Raiders Frozen Trail update release?
Thursday, October 8, 2026. Embark shipped Live Update 1.45.0 on September 8 and a store-only 1.48.0 on September 29, then deliberately skipped the usual Tuesday update to leave October 8 clear for Frozen Trail, its biggest update since launch.
Is Arc Raiders free to play during Frozen Trail week?
Yes, for the first time. Full-game access runs October 8 at 11:00 CEST to October 12 at 10:00 CEST on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no content limits. New players can drop Pendola Pass immediately if they queue with someone who has already unlocked it.
What is the Pendola Pass map in Arc Raiders?
An icy region beyond the Rust Belt mountain peaks, built as an old Italian village and Exodus transport hub that froze in isolation. Confirmed areas include a supermarket, a town square, an observatory and a buried train depot, plus the interior of the ARC Frigate. The hook is a crashed Emperor-class ARC that every machine on the map is converging on.
What happened to Cred and Raider Decks?
Both are gone. Cred stopped being a currency with Frozen Trail, and Raider Decks were replaced by Reward Passes paid in Raider Tokens. Embark warned players to spend leftover Cred with Shani or on remaining deck rewards before October 8 or lose it.
What is the Arc Raiders PvE toggle test?
A limited beta running October 13 to 20. A toggle puts you into a session where ARC machines are still lethal but other raiders cannot hurt you. Embark's stated reason is that a large and growing group plays for co-op and ARC hunting rather than fighting raiders.
