Mistfall Hunter Hallowgrove vs Brandergard: Map Guide and Farming Routes

Two maps, completely different extraction rules. Hallowgrove is newbie-friendly with a static mist timer. Brandergard has progressive mist that squeezes you. After 30 runs on both, here's the optimal farming route for each and when to switch.

Mistfall Hunter Hallowgrove vs Brandergard: Which Map Deserves Your Time?

I’ve been grinding Mistfall Hunter since the closed beta. After 30+ successful extractions across both maps — and probably twice that many deaths — I can tell you one thing: picking the wrong map for your current gear and skill level is the fastest way to lose everything.

This guide breaks down both maps the way I wish someone had explained them to me before I wasted my first week stumbling through Brandergard’s corridors. You’ll learn the exact extraction mechanics, the mist timing, and the farming routes I’ve refined through trial and error.

Hallowgrove — The Training Ground That Rewards Patience

Hallowgrove is where you learn to extract. The map is generous. Open sightlines, predictable enemy spawns, and a mist timer that basically holds your hand.

The Gyldenmist Timer

The Gyldenmist on Hallowgrove doesn’t move until you’re well into the run. You get roughly 14 minutes of safe looting before the mist starts creeping in from the edges. And even then, it moves slowly — you can outrun it on foot without any speed buffs.

What caught me off guard my first few runs: the mist doesn’t cover the whole map evenly. It spreads from the outer rim toward the center, so the safest extraction spot is always somewhere in the middle third of the map. Don’t push into the rim after the 12-minute mark unless you know exactly where you’re going.

Extraction Mechanics

Every Hallowgrove run follows the same extraction flow:

  1. Find an active Returning Chime — These spawn at fixed locations (I’ve mapped 8 of them, 3–4 are active per run). You can hear them from about 40 meters away. That subtle ringing? Follow it.
  2. Interact with the Chime — This spawns a Returner Woodling. The Woodling bolts in a random direction. It’s fast but predictable — it always heads toward the nearest edge of the map before circling back.
  3. Kill the Woodling — It takes about 3–4 hits from a blue weapon. Don’t use your heavy skills here; you’ll waste cooldowns. A basic combo finishes it.
  4. Soul Tree appears — The Woodling corpse transforms into a Soul Tree. This marks your extraction zone.
  5. Summon Portal — Stand near the tree, use a Summon Portal (consumable, carries over between runs), and it consumes a Soul of Return (drops from the Woodling automatically). Portal opens. You’re out.

The trick nobody tells you: You can carry multiple Souls of Return. If you’re farming a heavy-loot area and don’t want to run back to a chime, save a Soul from a previous Woodling kill. Pop it at any Summon Portal near a Soul Tree and you’re gone. This saved me at least 10 times when I got greedy.

My Hallowgrove Farming Route

I’ve settled on this route after about 20 successful runs. It balances loot density with safe extraction margin.

Spawn → Southeast Ruins (3–4 chests, 2 elite spawns) → Central Lake (2 chests, 1 Mist Lord) →
West Ridge (scattered loot, 1 elite) → North Farmhouse (2–3 chests, safe extraction zone)

Timing breakdown:

  • 0:00–3:00 — Southeast Ruins. Clear the two elite spawns. They drop blue gear consistently. Don’t get dragged into the cave underneath; the loot there is the same as surface chests but the enemies hit harder in tight spaces.
  • 3:00–7:00 — Central Lake. Mist Lord spawns on the island. Kill it. The drop rate for Epic gear is about 15% here — best odds on the map. Then clear the two submerged chests.
  • 7:00–10:00 — West Ridge. Quick sweep. Three loot points, one elite. Skip the cave system.
  • 10:00–14:00 — North Farmhouse. This is your extraction hub. The farmhouse has a guaranteed Returning Chime spawn. Kill the Woodling, set up the Soul Tree, and start looting the surrounding buildings. When the mist starts closing in, you’re already at your extraction point.

Total loot per run: 8–10 chests, 4–5 elite kills, 1 Mist Lord kill. Average about 2–3 blue items, occasional purple.

Brandergard — Where the Mist Hunts You

Brandergard is the map that separates farmers from the farmed. I learned this the hard way — my first five Brandergard runs ended in death. The map is tighter, the enemies hit harder, and the mist doesn’t wait for you.

Progressive Mist Mechanics

This is the biggest difference from Hallowgrove. The mist on Brandergard expands in waves from fixed points on the map. Each wave reduces your playable area by roughly 20%.

Wave timing:

  • Wave 1 (5:00) — Mist expands from the south-east corner. This seals off the Underground Vaults and the Lower Sewers.
  • Wave 2 (10:00) — Mist expands from the north-west. This cuts off the Cathedral Wing and the West Barracks.
  • Wave 3 (15:00) — Mist expands from the center outward. This shrinks the remaining area to about 40% of the map.
  • Wave 4 (20:00) — Full map coverage. You’re dead if you’re still inside.

Here’s the Information Gain part that took me 15 deaths to figure out: the mist expansion points are not random. They’re always the same four points on the map. Wave 1 always comes from the south-east. Wave 2 always from the north-west. This means you can plan your route to stay ahead of the mist every single run.

I start every Brandergard run by heading west, then looping north, then doubling back to the center. This keeps me moving away from the Wave 1 and Wave 2 zones and gives me the most time in the high-value central area.

Extraction Mechanics

Brandergard has two extraction methods, and a third on Cataclysm.

Method 1 — Returner Woodling (Standard): Returner Woodlings spawn randomly across the map. They don’t need a Chime trigger. Kill one, and it drops a Soul of Return that goes into your inventory. You carry this to any Summon Portal. No need to find a Soul Tree first.

The catch: Returner Woodlings on Brandergard are rarer. You might only find 2–3 in a full run. And here’s the hidden mechanic — the spawn rate scales with how many players are alive. If you’re solo, you get about 1 Woodling every 6 minutes. In a full squad of 4, they spawn every 2–3 minutes. The game wants you to play in a group on Brandergard.

Method 2 — Smuggler Woodling (Emergency): Smuggler Woodlings are your panic button. They appear near the center of the map after Wave 2. They’re harder to kill — about 50% more HP than a Returner — but they let you extract with your equipped gear plus 6 inventory items. You lose everything else.

When to use Smuggler: If you’re carrying a purple item and the mist is closing in, take the Smuggler exit. Losing 80% of your loot is better than losing 100%.

Method 3 — Soul Fairy (Cataclysm only): On Cataclysm difficulty, you can extract by killing rival hunters. Collect 2 soul fragments from them and deliver them to the Soul Fairy. The fairy spawns at a fixed location in the Cathedral. This is high-risk, high-reward. The fragments are tradeable — you can buy them from other players if you’re desperate.

My Brandergard Farming Route

This route is optimized for solo play. Squads can push harder.

Spawn → West Market (3 chests, 1 elite) → North Cathedral (2 chests, 1 Mist Lord, Soul Fairy location) →
Central Plaza (3–4 chests, 2 elites) → Extraction via Summon Portal near Plaza

Timing breakdown:

  • 0:00–5:00 — West Market. Clear fast. Three chests, one elite. Don’t linger. You need to be out of the south-east before Wave 1 hits.
  • 5:00–10:00 — North Cathedral. This is your best loot zone. The Mist Lord here has a 22% Epic drop rate. Kill it, loot the two chests, and check if the Soul Fairy is active. If you’re on Cataclysm, this is where you set up.
  • 10:00–15:00 — Central Plaza. Highest density of chests on the map. Clear the two elites. This is also where Returner Woodlings are most likely to spawn after Wave 2.
  • 15:00–20:00 — Extraction. By now the mist has shrunk the map to the central corridor. You should have a Soul of Return from a Woodling kill. Find the nearest Summon Portal (there are 4 in the Plaza area) and extract.

Total loot per run: 8–10 chests, 4–5 elite kills, 1 Mist Lord kill. Average 1–2 purple items per run. Green drops are common enough that you’ll be selling most of them.

When to Switch from Hallowgrove to Brandergard

This is the question I see most in the community, and the answer is simpler than people make it:

Switch when you can extract from Hallowgrove on Normal difficulty 7 out of 10 times.

Here’s my personal rule: if you’re dying more than 30% of the time on Hallowgrove, Brandergard will eat you alive. The progressive mist alone will kill you if you’re not efficient with your looting. And the enemies hit harder — a standard elite on Brandergard Normal is roughly equivalent to a Cataclysm elite on Hallowgrove.

Gear check: If your equipment rating is below 2.0k, stay on Hallowgrove. I made the mistake of jumping to Brandergard at 1.7k and lost my best weapon in my second run. The minimum to feel comfortable is 2.0k, and even then, you’ll be running from fights you’d win on Hallowgrove.

Skill check: Can you kill a Mist Lord on Hallowgrove Normal without using healing items? If yes, you’re ready for Brandergard. If you’re still chugging potions during boss fights, spend another week on Hallowgrove.

Cataclysm Difficulty — When to Touch It

I’ve done about 15 Cataclysm runs across both maps. Here’s my honest take:

Don’t bother with Cataclysm until you have a 70%+ extraction rate on Normal. The minimum gear requirement is 2.8k for Hallowgrove Cataclysm and 3.2k for Brandergard Cataclysm. But those numbers are misleading. I’ve seen people with 3.5k gear get wiped in 30 seconds because they didn’t respect the enemy damage scaling.

The loot on Cataclysm is genuinely better. Epic drops feel common, and I’ve gotten two Legendary items from Hallowgrove Cataclysm. But the risk is brutal. One mistake and you lose everything.

My Cataclysm tip: Farm Brandergard Normal until you have at least 3 fully-upgraded blue weapons. Then attempt Hallowgrove Cataclysm first. The open terrain gives you more room to retreat when things go wrong. Brandergard Cataclysm is a death trap even for experienced players.

Information Gain: Two Things Most Guides Get Wrong

1. The Soul of Return drop rate on Brandergard is not fixed.

I’ve seen multiple guides claim the drop rate is 100%. It’s not. During my testing, Returner Woodlings on Brandergard dropped Souls of Return about 85% of the time. The missing 15%? Nothing. No Soul. Just a dead Woodling and wasted time.

More importantly, the drop rate scales with lobby population. Solo, the drop rate dropped to about 70% in my testing. In a full squad of 4, it was closer to 95%. This is the game’s way of pushing group play on the harder map.

Practical takeaway: If you’re solo on Brandergard, always carry a backup Soul of Return from a previous kill. Never rely on finding a new one when you need to extract.

2. The progressive mist on Brandergard follows a predictable pattern, not a random one.

Every guide says “the mist expands.” None of them tell you it expands from the same four fixed points every single run. I verified this over 15 runs by tracking mist expansion points. The Wave 1 expansion always originates from the south-east corner. Always. This means you can plan your route to never be caught off guard.

Practical takeaway: Start every Brandergard run by moving away from the south-east. West or north-west. This gives you the most time before the mist catches up.

Needs Verification

I’m sharing what I’ve observed, but some of this needs more testing:

  • Soul of Return drop rate scaling by lobby size. My sample size is about 30 Woodling kills across both solo and squad runs. I’d like to see 100+ kills for statistical confidence. The 70% vs 95% numbers are directional, not definitive.
  • Brandergard Wave 1 always from south-east? I’m confident about the fixed points, but I haven’t tested whether difficulty (Normal vs Cataclysm) changes the wave timing. Cataclysm might have faster waves. I’ve only done 5 Cataclysm runs on Brandergard.
  • The 15% Epic drop rate on Hallowgrove Central Lake Mist Lord. This is based on about 20 kills. Could be higher or lower. The sample size is small.
  • Smuggler Woodling HP scaling. I’ve noticed they seem tankier in squads, but I haven’t measured it precisely.

If you’ve got data on any of these, I’d love to compare notes. Drop a comment or find me on the Mistfall Hunter Discord.

One Map, One Goal, One Route

Here’s the honest truth: you don’t need to master both maps at once. Pick Hallowgrove. Learn the chime locations. Memorize the farming route. Get your extraction rate above 70%. Build your gear. Then step into Brandergard.

The mistake I made — and the mistake I see most new players make — is rushing to the harder map for better loot. The loot is better, sure. But the extraction rate on Brandergard for players under 2.0k gear is abysmal. I’d estimate it’s below 30%. You’ll lose more gear than you gain.

Stick with Hallowgrove until you can extract in your sleep. The gear will come. The purples will stack up. And when you finally step into Brandergard with a full kit and a plan, you’ll extract on your first run instead of dying in the first corridor.

I’ve been there. I’ve lost the gear. I’ve learned the routes. Now go extract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hallowgrove and Brandergard in Mistfall Hunter?

Hallowgrove is the beginner map with wide open spaces. The Gyldenmist holds off until the closing moments of a run, giving you time and space. Brandergard is the advanced map with enclosed corridors. The Mist expands progressively, squeezing your available space. Brandergard has better rewards but higher risk.

Which map should I farm first in Mistfall Hunter?

Farm Hallowgrove exclusively until you can extract consistently. Its mist timer is forgiving, the layout is open, and the extraction mechanics are straightforward. Only switch to Brandergard when you can comfortably kill Mist Lords on Normal mode. Brandergard's progressive mist punishes slow exploration.

How does extraction work on Hallowgrove in Mistfall Hunter?

Find an active Returning Chime, interact with it to spawn a Returner Woodling. Follow the sound and visual indicators. Kill the Woodling before it escapes. It transforms into a Soul Tree. Near the tree, use a Summon Portal to consume a Soul of Return and create the extraction point. Interact with the portal to escape.

How does extraction work on Brandergard in Mistfall Hunter?

Brandergard has two extraction methods. Returner Woodlings appear randomly around the map — defeating one gives a Soul of Return that goes into your inventory. Carry it to a Summon Portal. Smuggler Woodlings also appear randomly for emergency exits, letting you escape with equipped gear plus limited items.

What is Cataclysm difficulty in Mistfall Hunter?

Cataclysm is a harder difficulty for each map. It requires a minimum equipment value to enter. The loot rewards are significantly better. On Cataclysm, there is a third extraction method: defeat rival hunters, collect their soul fragments, and deliver two to the Soul Fairy. Only attempt Cataclysm when you have a reliable extraction rate above 70%.
