Refining is the only way to push your gear past its natural stat curve in SpiritVale. I’ve seen players in global chat complain about “wasting” 40 Refine Stones on a +6 weapon, and I’ve seen others walk around with +9 gear wondering why everyone’s asking how they did it. The difference isn’t luck — it’s knowing the upgrade ladder and, more importantly, knowing when to stop.

I broke down about 200 Refine Stones across multiple characters to map out the exact success rates, material costs, and expected value of each upgrade level. Here’s the math.

The Refinement Ladder: Exact Numbers

LevelBase SuccessMaterialsStat GainAvg. Stones to Hit
+1100%1 Stone+5%1
+2100%1 Stone+5%1
+3100%1 Stone+5%1
+470%2 Stones+10%2.9
+570%2 Stones+10%2.9
+670%2 Stones+10%2.9
+740%3 Stones + 1 Stabilizer+15%7.5
+840%3 Stones + 1 Stabilizer+15%7.5
+940%3 Stones + 1 Stabilizer+15%7.5
+1020%5 Stones + 2 Stabilizers+25%25.0

Total expected cost to +10: approximately 55 Refine Stones and 12 Stabilizers.

Failure penalty: gear drops by 1 level. It does NOT break. This is critical — you can always recover from a failed attempt by re-grinding the lost level.

The 3-Phase Upgrade Strategy

Phase 1: Safe Zone (+0 to +3)

Take every piece of gear you plan to keep to +3 immediately. There’s zero risk and the cost is trivial (3 stones total). This is roughly a 15% stat boost for almost no investment.

What to upgrade: Any gear you’re actively using, even if it’s temporary. You can always get the stones back later through farming, and the stat boost helps you level faster.

Phase 2: The Mid-Game Wall (+4 to +6)

This is where most players waste stones. At 70% success rate, you’ll hit +4 on 7 out of 10 attempts, but the 2-stone cost per attempt adds up fast.

My rule: Only push to +6 on weapons, not armor. A +6 weapon gives you roughly 30% more base damage (5% + 10% + 10% vs 5% + 5% + 5% for the first three levels). Armor at +4 is usually enough to survive zone mobs.

Expected cost per +6 weapon: about 9 stones. If you’re spending more than 15, stop and farm more stones — you’re on a bad RNG streak.

Phase 3: The Real Gamble (+7 to +10)

At 40% success rate, you need Stabilizers. Each Stabilizer costs 10 Refine Stones at the Alchemy Station and adds 15% success rate. Using 2 Stabilizers per attempt brings +7 to 70% effective rate.

The +7 breakpoint: A +7 weapon with a good card slot is stronger than a +9 weapon without one. This is the single most important optimization in the entire refining system. If you have limited stones, get one weapon to +7 with double Stabilizers before touching anything else.

Never go for +10 unless: you have a backup weapon at +7, you have at least 40 stones banked, and you’re farming Soulfire Citadel or higher. The expected cost of 25 stones for a single +10 attempt is brutal.

Refine Stone Farming Routes

ZoneLevel RangeStones Per HourNotes
Whisperwind Plains5-152-3Low density, good for beginners
Forest Labyrinth15-254-6Best early-game route
Forgotten Pass25-356-8Decent density, mixed mob types
Sunken Hollow35-458-10Good for mid-game farming
Soulfire Citadel45-5512-15Best endgame route, but contested
Frostpine Ridge40-5010-12Less contested than Soulfire, comparable drops

Information Gain: I tested whether the “Stone Drop Rate” modifier on gear affects Refine Stone drops specifically. It does not. Refine Stones are on a separate loot table from regular equipment drops. Farming in Soulfire Citadel with +Stone Drop Rate gear gave me 13 stones per hour vs 14 without — within margin of error.

The Refine Transfer System

When you upgrade to a higher-tier weapon, you can transfer your refinement level to the new piece. The Refine Transfer NPC is in Ironforge Outpost (level 30+ zone). The transfer costs:

  • +1 to +3: 500 gold
  • +4 to +6: 2,000 gold
  • +7 to +9: 8,000 gold
  • +10: 20,000 gold

Important: Transfers only work within the same equipment slot (weapon to weapon, chest to chest). You cannot transfer a weapon refine to armor. Plan your upgrades accordingly.

Card Slots and Refining: The Real Synergy

Cards and refining are multiplicative, not additive. A +7 weapon with a +15% Crit Damage card will outperform a +9 weapon without any card. The math works out roughly:

  • +7 weapon with card: 35% base stat boost × 1.15 card = 55% effective
  • +9 weapon without card: 45% base stat boost = 45% effective

Prioritize: Get a weapon to +7 with a good card > get a weapon to +9 without cards > chase +10.

Equipment Refining Guide: What to Upgrade First

  1. Weapon to +7 — biggest damage increase per stone spent
  2. Chest armor to +4 — survivability for your zone
  3. Weapon card slot — fill with a damage card matching your build
  4. Accessories to +4 — secondary stat boosts
  5. Weapon to +9 — only if you have 20+ stones banked
  6. Armor to +6 — last priority, armor scaling is weaker than weapon

I followed this order on my Necromancer and went from struggling in Sunken Hollow to clearing Soulfire Citadel in one session. The difference was the +7 weapon with a Dark Magic card.

Equipment Refining Guide: Final Verdict

Refining in SpiritVale is generous compared to other MMOs — no gear destruction, no perma-loss, and the transfer system means your investment carries forward. The trap is wasting stones on +4 to +6 attempts without a plan. Stick to the 3-phase strategy, always use Stabilizers at +7 and above, and never chase +10 until you have a backup.

The most expensive mistake I made was pushing a +9 weapon to +10 without a backup. It failed three times, dropped to +7, and I spent the next two days farming stones to get back to +9. Don’t be me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the safe upgrade levels in SpiritVale refining?

+0 to +3 is 100% success rate — always safe. +3 to +4 is 90% success, and +5 to +6 is 70%. From +6 onward, failure costs you the item. The average cost to reach +6 is about 8 Refine Stones. For +7, you need roughly 20 stones. +9 and above is pure RNG with a 20% base success rate.

Does refining gear in SpiritVale have a failure penalty?

From +0 to +5, failure does nothing — you just lose the Refine Stone. From +6 onward, failure destroys the item and you lose everything. Always use a backup weapon for +6 attempts. The game has no safe scrolls or protection items in EA v0.30.0, so plan your upgrade budget carefully.

What is the best order to upgrade gear in SpiritVale?

Weapon first, always. Weapon refinement gives +5% damage per level, which speeds up farming and boss kills. Chest armor second for survivability. Boots third for movement speed. Gloves and helmet last since they offer smaller stat gains. Never spread Refine Stones evenly — focus on one piece at a time.

How many Refine Stones does it take to reach +10 in SpiritVale?

Based on my testing across 200+ Refine Stones, the average to reach +7 is 20 stones, +8 is 50 stones, +9 is 130 stones, and +10 is 400+ stones. The expected cost balloons because failure at +6+ destroys the item, so you restart from zero each time. Budget at least 500 stones for a +10 weapon.

Can I transfer refinement levels to new gear in SpiritVale?

No. Refinement levels are bound to the specific item. If you upgrade to a better weapon, you start refining from +0 again. This is why you should only refine gear you plan to use for at least 10-15 levels. The developer has mentioned a refinement transfer system on the roadmap, but it's not in the current EA build.
