When Goblin King Appears and How to Unlock the Fight

Goblin King is not a random encounter. He spawns as a special selectable mountain after you’ve progressed far enough on the World Spire path. The trigger conditions (based on community data and my runs):

  • You must have unlocked the World Spire tutorial goal
  • You need at least 2 Prestige runs completed (more permanent upgrades = better chance)
  • Mountain level range: roughly 30-50 depending on build quality
  • The fight has a visible timer — you don’t have unlimited time

On my first successful attempt (run 4, Prestige 3), Goblin King appeared at mountain 38. The game shows you the boss icon on the mountain select screen. You can choose to fight or continue grinding normal mountains.

Pre-Fight Checklist: Do Not Attempt Without These

Before you click that boss icon, check these thresholds. I failed my first 4 attempts across 2 Prestige cycles because I ignored one of these.

Damage check: Your DPS needs to be roughly 3x your current mountain requirement. If mountain 38 takes 5 minutes, Goblin King at the same level needs to go down in under 3 minutes. Test this: if you can clear a normal mountain at your current level in under 4 minutes, you’re in range.

Runner check: Boss fights produce a burst of loot when phases change. If your runners can’t clear a standard mountain’s ground loot within 10 seconds, they won’t handle the boss burst. Fix hauling before attempting.

Artifact setup:

  • Must-have: Goblin King’s Crown (if you have it from a previous attempt or lucky den drop)
  • Strongly recommended: Lucky Coin, Miner’s Heirloom or Fire Spirit Gem
  • Bring any +damage and +Luck artifacts you have

Prestige preparation: Don’t attempt Goblin King on run 1. You need permanent damage multipliers from at least 2 Prestige cycles minimum.

Phase 1: The Opening Barrage (100%-50% HP)

Goblin King starts with a ranged attack pattern. He throws projectiles at your dwarves while the mountain takes damage normally.

Mechanics:

  • Projectiles target random dwarves every 3-4 seconds
  • Damage is moderate but frequent
  • The mountain surface is clear — no falling rocks during Phase 1
  • Calamity bar fills at 1.5x normal rate

Strategy:

  • Focus all damage upgrades on output — there’s no need for runner capacity here yet
  • Position your best damage dealers (Flamers, Demo Dwarves)
  • Ignore the projectiles — they stun briefly but rarely kill
  • Push damage hard. Phase 1 is a race

Phase transition trigger: Exactly 50% HP. The boss stops attacking, summons minions, and your ground fills with ore.

Phase 2: Summon Phase (50%-25% HP)

This is where most first-timers fail. The boss summons Goblin minions that attack your runners.

Mechanics:

  • 3 Goblin minions spawn every 20 seconds
  • Minions target runners, stunning them for 5 seconds on hit
  • The mountain surface floods with ore from the phase transition burst
  • Calamity bar fills at 2x rate

Strategy:

  • Runner survival becomes priority. If runners die, no loot gets collected, your economy stalls
  • Use Mithril Chainmail artifact or runner dodge upgrades if available
  • Consider swapping a damage artifact for Sturdy Boots (+10% dodge) if runners are dying
  • Keep damage going — don’t pause to deal with minions directly

Why I failed my first two times here: I had 8 runners but no survival upgrades. Minions stunned every runner within 30 seconds and loot sat on the ground. My DPS was fine but my economy collapsed. Fixed it by equipping one survival artifact and adding 2 more runners (10 total).

Phase 3: Enrage (25%-0% HP)

The boss stops summoning minions and goes back to direct attacks — but much faster.

Mechanics:

  • Projectile rate doubles (every 1.5-2 seconds instead of 3-4)
  • Projectile damage increases by roughly 50%
  • The mountain health bar drains visibly — this phase is short
  • Calamity bar hits max and disasters trigger frequently

Strategy:

  • This is the “burn” phase. All-in on damage
  • If you have Demolition Dwarves, their Big Bomb procs are most valuable here
  • Accept that some dwarves will die. The phase lasts roughly 30-60 seconds
  • Pop any rune or ritual buffs you’ve saved

Phase transition trigger: Boss death at 0% HP. You get a burst of loot including the Crown artifact, Mithril (20-30), Mountain Souls (5-10), and progression toward World Spire.

Phase 3 (25-0%)Demo Dwarves (Big Bomb)Demolition Plans, Goblin King’s CrownBurst damage

Quick artifact swapping tip: In the mountain selection screen before the boss, check if you can save artifact presets. If not, memorize 3-4 swaps you’ll make during the fight. I keep damage artifacts equipped for Phase 1, swap to survival during the Phase 1-2 transition, then swap back to burst for Phase 3.

What To Do If You Fail (And Why You Probably Will the First Time)

Failure is the expected outcome for a first attempt. Here’s the recovery plan:

If you fail:

  • Goblin King retreats. No permadeath, no resource loss
  • You can keep grinding normal mountains on the same run
  • The boss respawns on your next Prestige run (not the same run)

What to improve before next attempt:

  1. One more Prestige cycle (more permanent damage)
  2. Better artifact pool (more slots, higher tiers)
  3. Specifically: find or equip Lucky Coin and any +boss-damage relics
  4. Check your runner count — I added 2 extra runners between attempt 2 and 3 and it made Phase 2 survivable

How many attempts it took me: 3 Prestige cycles, 9 total attempts. First kill on attempt 9. My kill setup was: Flamer build (main), 10 runners with full speed upgrades, Lucky Coin + Fire Spirit Gem + Runner’s Blessing artifacts equipped.

Goblin King Verdict: A DPS Check That Teaches You Endgame Scaling

Goblin King is Dwarf Eats Mountain’s way of telling you “your build needs focus, not breadth.” I spent my first attempt with a jack-of-all-trades setup — some miners, some flamers, some demos, spread upgrades everywhere. It didn’t work. My successful attempt had a focused Flamer build with specific artifact support.

Three things matter for the kill: focused damage spec, runner survival in Phase 2, and enough permanent Prestige upgrades to hit the DPS threshold. If you have all three, the fight is doable. If you’re missing any one, the timer will catch you.

After the kill: congratulations. You’ve unlocked the next step toward World Spire and Mountain 100. The boss artifacts you get here make subsequent boss fights (yes, there are more) significantly easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the Goblin King in Dwarf Eats Mountain?

Goblin King appears as a special mountain around mountain 30-50, depending on your Prestige level and progress. It is marked with a crown icon on the mountain selection screen. You need to have unlocked the World Spire path and progressed far enough in your current run.

What damage do I need to beat Goblin King in Dwarf Eats Mountain?

You need roughly 3x your normal mountain DPS at the same level. Goblin King has a time limit — fail to kill him within the timer and he retreats. The Boss Killer build with Goblin King's Crown artifact (+100% boss damage) is highly recommended for first-time kills.

What happens if I fail the Goblin King fight in Dwarf Eats Mountain?

You do not lose anything permanently. Goblin King retreats and you can keep progressing your run. Come back stronger with better upgrades, artifacts, or a Prestige cycle. The fight scales with your current run power, so a Prestige with better permanent upgrades is the best preparation.

What rewards do I get for killing Goblin King in Dwarf Eats Mountain?

Killing Goblin King drops treasure including the Goblin King's Crown artifact (+100% boss damage), a significant Mithril reward, Mountain Souls, and unlocks the next step toward the World Spire. The Crown alone makes subsequent boss fights dramatically easier.

What dwarf classes are best against Goblin King in Dwarf Eats Mountain?

Flamers with fire-scaling artifacts perform best due to consistent damage over time. Demolition Dwarves with Big Bomb procs are second-best for burst damage windows. Miners alone will not cut it — you need specialized damage classes by this point in the game.
